Jamaica- change to travel advisory- would you still go?

When we visited 20 years ago, men would float by on little boats offering drugs, while we were in the resort beach or having lunch at the resort gazebo by the beach. That happened day and night, it was intrusive and annoying. We were also offered drugs by our cab drivers.

We haven’t been back since, as I don’t like constantly being solicited for drugs during my vacation.

I mean if you're in a lux resort why are you worried? If you are don't go. Jamaica is not exactly a good place to be out and about - even years ago I was always told how shady it was if I'm going out of resort.

A lot of places though are risky. I mean you can get shot in NYC you know?

I never had a prob going to Mexico. Again you have to very aware of your surroundings and careful of your accommodations but to be afraid of a State Dept warning of a place that was never all that safe anyway you know. You do you.

If you're at Round Hill or Half Moon, I would expect the security to be top notch. When we were there, we never felt unsafe, and there weren't random people walking the beach. The All-Ins, not so much.

No flashy jewelry. A lot of women leave their engagement rings, anything worth reselling at home. Take costume jewelry if you must, but nothing that resembles a Diamond.

Personally, I’m done with Jamaica, the Bahamas, and T&C. The crime isn’t worth the risk.

I do agree with this RE not walking alone and not wearing anything flashy. I have a soft spot for Jamaica but once we were there, and it was a very upscale resort and workers were offering us drugs and I don’t mean pot. Another time I had a diamond necklace stolen Out of my room that I had forgotten to put in the safe

Everyone knows not to take high valued jewelry on vacation, esp to Jamaica, Mexico etc. that was your own fault

I think if you go and stay at Hedonism and pack light, you’ll be fine.

Ah, Hedonism. Don't forget to pack the appropriate costume for each evening.

We had a similar situation a few years back when Cancun started getting bad. A week before our non-refundable reservation at the Andaz Mayakoba (which is a development of 5 upper end resorts behind a gate outside of Cancun) a tourist boat was caught in crossfire between drug runners not far from there and I believe State also raised the level at that time. When I called the hotel they were very nice and told us all about the armed guards on the beach they had newly stationed, but when I asked to cancel anyway as that didn't sound relaxing at all, they were very gracious and fully refunded.

We cancelled and went to Orlando. Not my favorite vacation, but no regrets about not spending my entire trip worried about our safety.

This is crazy! They are getting treated for HIV prevention. From article:

They are both receiving medical care at home in Kentucky, which includes thousands of dollars in preventative care, including HIV prevention

Don't blame Mrs. Howell, how could she know the local heathens would steal her diamond necklace?

Nope I wouldn't.

I was roofied at a high end resort in PR. Luckily, my husband showed up about 15 minutes afterward (he was coming out of a work conference) and was able to take me back to the room. It can happen anywhere.
