They are being turned away because the college will only take so many kids from one school. There are more applications than spots. Regardless of if you call it a quota or not, UMD is not going to take every student in that program. |
I don't get the entitlement that rich families expect merit. |
That's not true, at least for UMD. An AO from UMD said that the magnet kids are considered their own group/cohort. In other words, seen as two separate high schools. I know that Blair, for example, sends a separate high school profile for magnet students. Historically, UMD accepts 45-50% of applicants from Blair. Typically, 300-400 students apply each year. If UMD didn't do this then the STEM magnet kids (and CAP) would take 90% of the seats. I will try to find the podcast and post a link. |
Rubbish. And they Ruby take every kid from a school but they certainly don’t have quotas. Stop repeating this nonsense. |
So much for education as an end in itself. |
My dc’s favorite part of being in a magnet is being with other students who take school seriously, grasp concepts quickly, and are generally not disruptive. The teachers mention how special it is to have whole classes of students like that. The cohort is a huge benefit. |

Agree the cohort is a truly wonderful element of these programs. |
Agree and this is how I see it for my kid at RMIB. She is hoping to get some money. |

| Maybe because I’m not a Maryland native, but I just can’t wrap my mind around people fighting to get into UMD. |
Just UMD CS. CS programs are hard to get in. Other majors shouldn’t be hard for UMD |
| someone here said SMCS magnet is reported as a separate group, almost like a separate high school. Does anyone have an idea what Poolesville does, since they house 3 magnet programs? Are they all reported as separate groups for colleges? |
I believe all reported together |
| Are there three separate groups for Blair: SMCs, CAP, and general? |
