I have a kid in magnet and this is absolutely what all the kids are doing, def gaming the system. |
Also rampant cheating by one certain group of kids. |
Which ? Bribing teachers or paying others to do their hw? Both? Let's go to other way and say your kid needs to put their phone down and focus if they want to get it done efficiently. |
Do you mean by a certain ethnic group? |
There is really no curriculum in hs. It’s honors for everyone and no textbooks, not much if anything b |
There is an extra class and few electives. Look at it. |
No school allows algebra in 5th so you are making it up and all kids can take language starting in 6th but you still need a minimum of two years in hs. |
Here is the magnet class options. Decide for yourself https://old.mbhs.edu/departments/magnet/courses_sci.php |
Geometry in 8th is in fact 2 years ahead of "the standard" and 1 year ahead of "the norm." The standard is Math 8 in 8th grade, Algebra in 9th, and Geometry in 10th. This gets one to pre-calc as a senior. The norm that is pushed (and typical for many students) is Algebra in 8th, Geometry in 9th, Algebra 2 in 10th. This gets one to calculus as a senior. Looking at the Blair Magnet listing, appears one can start with Magnet Geometry. Notice that, compared to "regular", where the norm is 1 year of Algebra 2 followed by 1 year of Pre-Calculus, magnet is accelerated as a 1 1/2 year Pre-Calc A/B/C course that replaces the standard two years of Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc. To the OP, the Blair Magnet math requirement is rigorous. If your DC is fine with the math, then no problem. But if mathematics is not their strongest subject, the program could be a challenge. Link to the listings, if that helps. But you probably already know this. https://old.mbhs.edu/departments/magnet/courses.php |
