Brussels Air. Three hour layover going and 14 hour overnight layover coming home (the other option was a ridiculously early return option). Not entirely convenient, I know. But that fare came and went quickly.

Also did Lisbon in June 2023 for less than that, on Iberia.

With layovers both times...

British Airways and Turkish Airlines are both having sales for April.

They are charging $700 a ticket or a little less to:
London
Paris
Milan
Athens

And many other places. Yes, it's less time there. A week or nine days isn't ideal. But it's still an opportunity to go to Europe with your family for half the price as in Summer, and the hot European summers, crowds, and lack of air conditioning become a non-issue.

$700 may be the ticket price but British Airways also applies a 'carrier imposed charge' that it over 50% of the ticket cost. So the actual cost of the ticket is closer to the $1100 that other carriers are charging.

If it’s possible to take your child out of school a couple of days before spring break starts, it’s much cheaper.

There are easyJet flights to London 6/13 to 7/3 for about 800 euros per person. Both connect in Iceland.

Summer 2023: I bought tickets to Italy at the beginning of May and paid about $900 per ticket. We traveled in mid-August and flew into Venice and out of Rome on Delta.

Overnight layovers like that is a nonstarter for me.

That's already baked into the price for cash tickets. You are conflating how BA scams people booking award tickets with cash prices.

Do you mean Icelandair? Easyjet does not fly to North America.

I saw around $770 pp to various EU cities on play and Norse with no luggage at all, not even a carry on. If that works for you, I don’t think it will get cheaper than that for mid summer. By adding luggage you are likely up to at least 1000 pp.
It used to be cheaper in early June, or May, but no more.
End of august is likely cheaper since most don’t want their kids to miss the first two weeks of school.

Multiple layovers, or just one in Brussels?

You sure about that? I don't see any orange dots west of Iceland.

In December, we were seeing flights over $2K for the summer for Greece, but there's usually a dip for a couple weeks early in the year. Dontcha know, they did go down for about a week. We nabbed some for $1,200 each all in (luggage, seats, etc). on British Airways, for July/Aug.
