Daycare costs - OMG

Okay so it’s cheaper. But I don’t like that only one adult is alone with the babies all day. Anything can happen and the babies cannot talk. No thanks. I rather pay more for licensed daycare facility. There are other adults there watching each other. It’s safer for the children.

Every in-home that we looked at was an adult plus one assistant because licensed in home daycares also have to adhere to legally required ratios. Ours was a loving family with three generation of women in the home. We read all the licensing reports for every provider we considered and called multiple references. I felt so much comfortable with that than a rotating cast of underpaid caregivers at a daycare.

Not to mention that every horror story I have heard about a child being injured or, worse, dying has occurred at a center. This was so sad and it was a well known national chain in a government building: https://wtop.com/dc/2017/01/3-year-old-boy-chokes-dies-department-labor-daycare/

And we briefly had our 1 yo at an in home with one teacher for 8 kids. That's allowed in MD as the legally required ratios are less stringent with a mixed age group. That daycare was well regarded but not right for us. The center DD has been at for years has been awesome. Very low teacher turnover, teachers are so sweet with the kids.

Btw, most child deaths and injuries happen at home. Don't kid yourself.

And they only get more expensive as they age

Not really. Daycare prices decrease from infant to toddler to preschool.

Np but this hasn’t happened with us! Daycare goes up an extra $50 a week every year which seems to counteract any price decrease we get for moving up classes. I swear it’s still the same price we paid as an infant.

There's also a middle gate to divide the 2s/3s room and the infant room if they need to like if the 2 babies are doing tummy time, etc.

I loved this too! It seemed so much more natural to have kids of multiple ages together. The older kids doted on the babies.

We are at an in-home daycare (Spanish immersion) for $1800 NW DC. The providers are wonderful but there are no frills. And our kid has been with the same cohort of 6 kids total for last 1.5 years.

We paid $1,700 when DD started as a baby in 2019, and now pay $1,500 now that she is in Prek. In our center prices do go down as the child gets older but this is moderated by the annual increases. I do feel like I remember seeing some centers that increased prices for Prek because they offer specials like Spanish and STEM or something.

Daycare prices decrease with child’s age usually — because state mandated staff:student ratios start very small, but those ratios grow larger as student gets older.

Not everyone. We live there but work in Tysons. We used a preschool/center on Great Falls Street in McLean, which took infants as young as 3 months. It was just wonderful. Note sure what it costs now. It was not a chain like Bright Horizons.
