Where do you shop?

I used to buy things at Target or the mall but I hate clothing from Target now and also don’t like paying retail prices for cheaply made clothes, even from some stores like j crew and banana. Now, I have waited for sales or sometimes shop online but I like actually trying on clothes.

Free People (my staple -- I do a huge order twice a year and wear those things constantly)
COS
Levis and rag and Bone for jeans

Secondhand in person (secondi or vintage shops in NYC when I am up there)

Brooks Brothers
Ann Taylor
Banana Republic
Ralph Lauren
Nordstrom (occasionally)
Boden (occasionally)

46 yo/size 4, if it matters.

There is stuff at Talbots I wouldn't touch. But they also have good classics--and lined pants!--if you scrutinize the listings. This winter they had a great all merino wool skirt, for example, and their cashmere sweaters are quite good quality for the price on sale. I could be faulted for buying jeans there, but I am hard to fit for pants and theirs fit me.

Yes their descriptions are quite good (fabric content, lengths/inseams, etc.). I also note that their classics sell out. For example, every year in early spring they sell full-length 100% cotton chinos. I buy in March even though I wont wear for a while bc otherwise they are gone.

My mother showed up in a stunning woven dress from Talbots from three years ago, black with a white horizontal line down the front and a little triangle opening high up on the neck, three quarter sleeves. I couldn’t believe it was Talbots.

I agree with this. I had never shopped at Talbots before September but when I wanted 100% wool, fully lined dress pants, the only ones I could find were at Talbots. The size charts were way off but once I got the correct size, I was pleasantly surprised. Can't say I will be shopping there often but I won't completely dismiss it anymore either.

Dior--love their bar jackets and a-line skirts. Flore Flore for knits. Levis for jeans. Ferragamo Varas and Oxfords. Max Mara coat. I only own about 30 items of clothing.

Agree. To me this was not a good sign. What'a next-Walmart?

Anthro

Boden (though the last year has been brutal styles)
The Fold - for work
Vuori - for comfy
Paige - for all my jeans
Milly and Alice & Olivia for one-off dresses
Simone Perele - for high end lingerie
Aerie - for everyday lingerie
Target - has one amazing pair of shorts that they pump out in 4 colors every season -that's the one thing I buy there
And there's a consignment store in my town (not the DMV) that gets great stuff - i probably get 20% of my wardrobe from there, and the stuff I buy ranges from designer stuff for $150 to $6 shirts from junk brands, depending on if it looks good.

Returns are not as easy on those sites as they are for larger clothing chains/department stores. Seems really risky to shop on consignment sites unless you own or have tried on the specific item and know in advance that it will fit.

I shop at TRR. Returns are super easy and for final sale I buy only brands that I've had before, so I know my size.

DC area is pretty conservative fashion wise due to the industry, so no wonder talbot is popular.
