McMansions

As someone who lives among (but not in) McMansions in Chevy Chase - eight (re)built within spitting distance since we moved in 4 years ago - I can see both sides of the argument. Some are definitely nicer than others, in terms of looking authentic and blending with the local architecture. And done right, big new houses in our neighborhood can raise our property values and the overall appeal of the area. But I don't get the proximity and lack of outdoor space - if I had $1.5m for a house, I'd happily sacrifice that 5th bathroom for a wee bit of privacy!! The other downside is that 2 of the 8 near us never really panned out for the builders -- one is apparently unfinished inside, while another reportedly never sold so the contractor just moved in. I wonder if builders are also getting the clue - there is one house a couple of blocks away that is being refurbished for sale as a significantly larger/posher house, but mostly retaining the original footprint. That seems much more sensible for all concerned...

They just did a segment on this very topic on NPR!

My only wish is that when someone tears down an old house, and builds a McMansion, that they respect the neighborhood and build something that fits in. I don't have anything against a bigger home (our home would be considered SMALL), only that it doesn't stand out like sore thumb. We've had a couple developers buy an old home and build a similar but much larger home, kept the trees, and the homes blend in with the neighborhood. These homes sell within weeks! The home next to ours looks like hotel from the back, literally.

I totally agree with this.
