Wasn't Impressed with Maret - What's So Great About It?

Not every school is the right fit for every child. It sounds like you like a more traditional, structured environment. To each their own.

This is true. You're not getting into Maret unless you're URM, super connected or ridiculously wealthy. The rest of us don't have to worry about what Maret is or isn't.
Move right along.

Our kid entered high school from public in recent years and we are none of these things. We did feel the school was a great fit for our kid during the admissions cycle and that has proven to be true. Our kid is having a great school experience.

OP, it sounds like you've decided it's not the right fit for your family. I wish you the best of luck in your school search and hope you find a school that is right for your kid and family.

Drop it with the "URM" business. It doesn't hold true these days and you lessen the achievements of those who are URM and get into these schools based on their achievements vs simply because they were born a certain color or of a certain heritage.

It absolutely, 100% holds true these days. Ask Maret--they actively advertise their high percentage of minority students. It's a huge admissions hook.
No one is saying they're not qualified. But is absolutely, positively is a reason they choose one kid over another.

It’s the “I have a mediocre white kid” defense. I would ignore.

1. Compare it with Field, Burke, St Andrews (further away).
2. It does have a rich but not as smart rep but you'll find a good mix of kids.
3. It is more laid back then a few schools and very small socially.

How is it considered not as smart? The kids are going to the same colleges as GDS kids every year.

It's just. Not. And everybody knows it.

Then it's pretty sad that GDS kids are so much smarter but going to inferior or similar colleges as Maret kids. $52k for tuition that doesn't provide lunch and going to similar colleges as a $46k school with lunch every day. 😂

Lunch is they big of a deal for you? You should try public school- it’s even cheaper and lunch is free!

we visited last year looking at 9th grade and i felt the same - could not pinpoint its personality. the three other schools' we toured had their own vibes/personalities that were easy to identify/quantify.

It was founded in 1911 and it's a private school known for educating the wealthy and connected along with the others (Sidwell, GDS, etc). To distinguish themselves, Maret has always had a crunchy vibe that has spiraled to super left in today's times. Obsessed with looking cool & diverse, they take it to the extreme. If this is appealing to you, then it's a good fit. Level headed, reasonable people that don't believe in following every fad- look elsewhere

No, it hasn't always had this. Through the 1980's, it was the place you sent your kid when they couldn't get into anywhere else, and Bullis was too far away. The demand for private schools was and is so strong, that it attracted a lot of money and VIPs who donated and made it what it is today. It is much better than it was then. But it never had a "lefty vibe" - that was always GDS.

This is more accurate.

Agree completely. Went to a DC private and grew ho here. It was not elite. It was for the slightly odd kids who didn’t have learning issues but didn’t get into traditional schools or wouldn’t have fit into those schools. But wow the reinvention has been successful because my kids are in private now and the way people talk about Maret is as if it’s Sidwell. I can’t get over playing sports against Maret back in the day and feeling like the school was for the kids that just don’t fit it or didn’t get in other places but whose parents wouldn’t do public.

That's exactly how we felt about Beuavoir. It was like...what koolaid has everyone drunk about this place?

Anonymous wrote:I thought OP was going to mention that advanced math classes are only offered online - that really struck me as unfortunate given the $50K+ price tag. This means that there aren't enough kids doing advanced math for even a small class and/or Maret isn't willing to invest in an in-person tutor for the few kids who might be capable of multi-variable calc or linear algebra.

You don’t know what you’re talking about MV and LA are in person at Maret

FWIW there have been several Sidwell kids who have come over to Maret despite them doing well academically at Sidwell (not counseled out). Students wanted the high school rigor but also more supportive environment---have good friends who made the move and have been happy. Kids didn't hate Sidwell but preferred Maret. This wasn't the case 15 years ago.

But that's exactly the point, posters are saying they don't want to go here. Sidwell or GDs are on a higher tier anyhow.

We considered Maret but chose Eastern.

You mean the three football players over the last 7 years?

Or the child of the founder of Blue Mercury…who was definitely not a football player. Nice try.
