High school coaches are NOT the ones making a difference at Metros. It's who has the most/best club swimmers, especially sprinters (obviously this is the #1 factor by far) + luck of the match up (who happens to swim which two events at Metros) + bad luck (e.g., there was at least one big DQ for Stoneridge that I can remember last year that made the meet closer than it would have been otherwise). Stoneridge won 2 of 3 relays last year, so I don't think their coach somehow messed up on the relays as you seem to suggest. |
They had Sun, Gemmell, Webb, Tucker, Lefavre, and House. That should win all 3 relays easily. If you had swapped coaches, I bet BCC scores 60-70 points less and SR scores 60-70 points more. One coach had their team. Ready to swim. One didn’t. |
Days plural is a funny choice of words because Gemmell only swam for SR 1-2 days a year. |
All of these kids show up ready to race at metros. They see these coaches at meets only (unless they happen to also be their club coach). The other thing that plays into metros is gambling on who is swimming what as others have mentioned. Also how much choice a coach has given swimmers in individual events. |
Would love to know what the BCC coach would have done differently. In any event, Stoneridge won and would have won by 20+ more points but for a DQ in 500 free. If the BCC coach is so amazing, maybe they'll find a way to beat WJ this year. I really doubt that will happen... |
He beat WJ last year totally outgunned. He got kids hyped up and ready to swim believing that they could achieve well beyond their personal bests. Kids who I would have pegged to go 16th to 24th at prelims ended up 8th-12th in many cases and it paid off big time. Getting your team ready to swim and ready to swim as a team for each other and fight for every point is 80% of the battle in HS coaching |
I think only one of that group is still swimming. They either graduated or quit club. Unless SR recruited more freshman, it’ll be a tough win this year. |
They’re really not in contention this year. SR got 5th in ISL and 7th at National Catholics. They definitely left points on the table with NSs at ISLs, but that’s not why they didn’t win. Also, not sure what their lineup will look like at Metros due to another school event. |
Metros Psych Sheet has been dropped, https://rmscswimming.com/metros-2024. |
Quoting this to the person who had it right back in November. Great fight between rm/wj. Bcc homers got that one wrong |
Nailed it |
didn’t BCC girls graduate 2 hs all-Americans in 2023? On top of their freshmen phenom and other solid club swimmers? People might have been sleeping on the lineup but it was there. As for the future, I see more private school parity - more HS all-Americans sprinkled across schools. |
BCC graduated one top notch sprinter and a few other very solid swimmers. I assume the freshman phenom you're referring to is now a sophomore, and then they have a number of solid club swimmers. They are only graduating one metros swimmer, so they will continue to be strong. WJ is in a similar position, and that will continue to be a good battle. |
