Can we talk pies? Thanksgiving pies?

I don’t think you need to bake it if you aren’t a good cook or baker or just don’t have the time but splurge on something from a good bakery.

Where can I get a good pie without trekking to Vienna or Arlington? Prefer to stay in NWDC. Has anyone tried the pies from Tatte?

Personally not a big fan, although I'm most definitely not young. I don't like pie crusts (or crusts in general; quiche, pot pie, cheesecake, etc.). I'm an experienced baker and have made them myself, and to me, absolutely not worth the effort. I do enjoy pie fillings, especially fruit ones. At that point, I'd rather make/eat something like a cobbler than a pie.

Definitely not young, I don't find pies involve much effort at all. I do think part of my liking pie is a sort of nostalgia thing but I cannot stand typical store-bought pies (never have bought a pie from an actual pastry place). Sadly, I get heartburn easily from them now, but still I like eating apple or pumpkin pie for breakfast after Thanksgiving. My work used to do a Thanksgiving at work (all remote now and the lease on the office space ends Dec 31) and they'd bring Costco pies and they were awful.

But even so, you likely have to pick up on a Weds, meaning it was baked on a mon or tues likely. So your thanksgiving pie is going to be a couple days old by thanksgiving and will assuredly have a soggy bottom.

These are not good pies.

What do you not like other than the price?

I also like Pie Gourmet. We just had the pumpkin pie recently, and I thought it was good. Not a holiday pie, but the banana cream pie gets raves every time. People always thank me for bringing it.

I'm planning on Wegmans. I've not had their apple pie, but I've had a peach galette that I liked very much.

Oh shut up. So happy for you.

Noooo. Please don’t bring that hydrogenated palm oil mess to anyone you care about

Healthwise, I’d say ghee, grassfed and organic butters are all way healthier than palm oil. Ick!

Palm oil is healthier than butter, fyi.

This was supposed to be in response to the “Pam oil mess” poster.

I have tried a lot of varieties from there and I have never liked one - crust or filling. But I seem to have high pie standards, love pie and have tried nearly every pie place in the DMV. The only ones I really like anywhere in this area are from Mom’s Apple Pie Co. in Leesburg. Red Truck Bakery is a second but their crusts are not nearly as good as their filling.
