OP, if you have a boy, I’d strongly recommend enough rec sports exposure so that your kid feels comfortable enough to join a pick-up game. It’s helpful for socializing.

The idea that sports are more important and should be prioritized over anything else like math club, glee club, chess, theatre, art club, etc. is so weird. What century are we in?

I agree. Maybe it's fine to make them try a variety of things in elementary school, but by middle school don't they know their own passions? I just don't understand the rationale behind it.

Who says it’s prioritized? My two teen athletes not only play sports year round but also play instruments (oldest is in regional orchestra) and are in various school clubs as well.
