What many people are missing with biobanding is having a few older players playing down isn't that big of a deal when you're focusing on development not wins.
A couple of older players playing down is an easier version of playing up for of age players. Like it or not MLSN was created to be a feeder for talent into MLS teams. Nobody cares which u13 team beats other u13 teams. Everyone cares about which players are playing up 2-3 age groups and dominating. Again, biobanding is one of the tools that enables higher levels of individual development. Biobanding shouldn't be used as a shortcut to wins. But even if it is who cares? The of age players get to experience higher levels of play in a limited fashion. |
There are so many published articles and research papers and studies about Relative Age Effect and Biobanding online, I don't know how anyone who's interested can still be confused or ignorant on the topic.
Belgium, Germany, Holland, England etc has been doing Biobanding for many years now. Many professional and international players you'll be watching this weekend on TV were bio-banded. It's not new nor extremely complicated. |
THIS...our son is in the one percentile of all height and weight charts. He is one of the more technically skilled players in his age group, and biobands at a local MLSN Club. The program was designed for kids like him. It has been a shame to see others mistreat the program and likely ruin it for kids like ours. |
Dealing with this right now with my son...offer went out to play his age group (with a Late Developer option). I don't know if this is what bio banding language looks like but would love to hear others' feedback. |
I feel the need to point out that football is banded by weight, not age, and that's why you don't hear about this as a problem. Youth football is called "Pound Ball" because it's grouped by pounds. |
FC Delco in PA uses bioband players all the time and by U16 one particular player (should be U17) is now one of the tallest on the team. I don't even think MLS next follows up to see if these players are still the underdeveloped ones. At what point, should a player just play his own age. |
If he got an offer to play his age group, why are you concerned about biobanding? |
Will be interesting to see in the next few years if relative age effects are reduced with ECNL on Aug to July while MLSNext/GA on Jan to Dec. Meaning each cutoff favors some but not others and players now have a choice. |
Relative Age Effect and Bio-banding exists in England who use September- August However, the Entire England Youth System uses September to August ECNL being different than the top league (MLS Next) and USYNT is more American soccer silliness. |
I think this is how it's supposed to be used but one of those clubs used biobanding for a couple kids who are early bloomers but just small. Great players though. |
Early bloomer and small? Then what's blooming? |
