Your comment makes no sense. No, kids starting IM in 4th grade who have not played an instrument before would not know how to read music. |
Gosh, reading comprehension is crap these days. Yes, she signed up for instrumental music to get the benefit of playing in a group and all of the wonderful things that come with it. She skipped class just twice when she thought she needed the extra time spent on math. That's a totally reasonable choice. |
Maybe you are the problem. She will be fine missing math. They rotate the times the kids go so she will not always miss math. Maybe you should work with her at home. She will be ok missing one 30 minute math class where they probably only teach for 5 minutes and then give them busy work. If she isn't attending, stop wasting the teachers time. |
There are scholarships and low cost ways to do it. |
It’s not unusual for kids to start music well before 4th grade. That’s my point. I’d be very surprised if her kid was unusual in knowing how to read music, within a group of 4th graders who play instruments. |
That's not how fourth grade math works but thanks for playing. There are at (bare minimum) least 20 minutes of instructional time. Then it's problem set, small group rotation, and extra practice on Zearn. (And no...no one is using Zearn to teach..it's supplemental ONLY) Maybe educate yourself first before posting. |
I know as been through it before. There isn't 20 minutes and problem sets. And, stop dumping the kids on computer games and try teaching. We heavily supplemented at home because of teachers like you. And, 20 minutes even if you are doing that is very little. They can miss that. And, if you are that worried, you can find time to go over the material with the kids. Many of our kids did instrumental music and were in compacted math with no issue. Compacted math is still really slow. |
Well then. That solves that. |
If you'd read the thread, you'd see that she chose to go to math on days when she'd already missed math class for recent illness and was catching back up. She's doing great at her instrument and is far from wasting the teacher's time. Still a reading comprehension issue on your part. |
No, you said "all the kids should know" how to read music which of course isn't true. Not everyone knows how to read music (yet) in beginning orchestra/band and so a kid who does would have an advantage over the many kids who don't. The PP didn't say that theirs was the only kid who could read music. Sheesh. |
Different fourth grade teacher here and you are not only completely clueless, you're a bully and you sound like a horrific person. Fourth grade math is *exactly* as the other person described. Zearn is NOT a game. To go through life so actively misinformed but pretending you know everything..is something....I feel extremely sorry for your children. |
Given you are posting here on a school day is telling. Teachers spend very little time teaching. There is zero reason why kids should be on a computer for math. My kid gave me all their log ons. Multiple math games and other things and they spent a good hour or two a day on it. |
Posting on my lunch period.... nice try. Not too bright are ya? Name the school this supposedly happens at. I'll wait. |
Given that you have such little respect for teachers, why aren't you homeschooling your kids then? |
We basically did in elementary. |
