What is even the point of private schools?

So they aren’t in class with your kids

with the insane woke brainwashing and the inbedding of politics into the circirulum and the loss of traditional learning

with schools and universities disregarding objective measures like SAT scores, AP test scores.

with top universities graduates having problems paying off their student loans and getting jobs

It all just feels pointless.

You go because you think the education/fit is better. That’s all. Kids still get into ivys and other great schools unhooked. There is no woke brainwashing at our private and the education is quite good. sat still needed for most people. Kids from privates don’t have student loans for the most part.

You don’t get privates.

The way they dress and show up for one thing. I see these kids in jerseys and wearing baseball hats indoors and I know what society is deteriorating.

this, it is insurance policy for priviledged juniors, so maybe enough packaging can get them into a top 50 school so they will end up a lawyer, accountant, doctor or some shit.

These can all be accomplished outside the top 50. I personally know many people who attended outside the top 50 who are in these careers.

Yep. You can fight your district tooth and nail for what they say they are there to provide or you can pay money to actually get it.

The point? OK, picking ONLY from the current Recent Topics list (9/8/23):

- we never had a "chair thrower" during 13 years of private school in DC. There were two such boys in ouir private ES, and they were counseled out promptly. Like, before year's end. (Chair thrower in my kid's class thread)

- we never experienced a brawl with another high school in 4 years of private DC high school (BCC-WJ brawl thread) (fights at QO thread)

-- we never had to work with a teacher for "extra" challenge work in math over a 12 yr period (APS thread)

-- we never "wondered" about what our "MS and HS path" was, despite living in the District (CH parents, MS and beyond?)

-- Algebra classes were never taught by teachers who don't actually understand algebra (MCPS 'Algegra classes' thread)

- - - - - And that's just today. Tomorrow's Recent Topics new threads will provide 10-20 more reasons why independent schools were the superior choice, K-12.

Kids are now both at T-15 colleges, unhooked. I seriously doubt SWW or Wilson would have been a better play.

Yes, this pretty much sums it up. I appreciate the extra writing and public speaking that's required as well.

Do public schools offer religion in the curriculum, or an all boys/all girls environment?

For many, it's that simple.

If you know, you know.

And if you don’t, you’ll continue to think public school is “good enough” and cede tremendous ground by default to all students graduating from top private schools.

Also, I have personally known many DCPS grads who struggled in college. Sure, on DCUM somebody's uncle's cousin's friend left JR and aced his classes at Harvard but in my real-life world, among people I know and trust, (relatives, close friends, etc) there are many grads who struggled. So the point of private school for us is far, far better instruction.

Were you monitoring the situation and helping as it is shocking your kids could barely write a basic essay? Mine, in public school had that skill starting in 5th and come 7/8th was a strong writer. We had some good teachers and helped at home.

+1. Both of my children left our IB Ward 3 DCPS for a Big 3 in 9th grade and we have zero regrets.

During their time in DCPS, my children encountered serial chair throwers and chokers—with ineffective interventions from teachers and administrators.

They also witnessed some of the teachers aides doing the school work for students with learning differences.

I’m so glad to be done with DC public schools! Free is nice, but there’s still a cost.

OP, just send your kid to a conservative school and then Liberty or Hillsdalle for college, and stop melting like a snowflake because a private business provides a service to its satisfied customers.

Sorry your kid didn't get into any of the magnets.

What are magnets? Our kids have been in private school since age 4 and we haven't ever considered a public option.

Magnets are the free government-run Big 3 public schools, that share a campus with a local public school.

How did your kid get into a top private if they couldn't even write a decent essay?
