I agree. I would push on this and ask for a name in DCPS to reach out to if it can’t be resolved at the school level. It’s crazy that they’re making people choose between math and foreign language. It’s also bizarre that this kid was not identified for accelerated math in 6th grade so he could take math 8 during the summer; this is what most kids taking algebra 1 in 7th do. What changed between end of 6th and beginning of 7th?

There's supposedly a new thing (that I can't find anything about online) the DREAM initiative: DCPS Road to Equity and Achievement in Math - so scooping up kids who took math 7 in 6th grade but weren't part of summer acceleration. But sacrificing language is super crappy.

DCPS and their empty acronyms. Just tax dollars down the drain.

I want my tax dollars teaching kids algebra. It’s my dream.

The dream initiative is not actually going to teach kids algebra. It’s going to make them all take it by 8th grade. Which in my opinion is not a good idea and will make some kids accelerate too fast and not learn algebra.

At our MS (not Deal) they put all kids into “accelerated” Math 6 and from there decide who is going to do Algebra in 8th. So the default is just Math 6 “acceleration” not that everyone takes Algebra in 8th.

Look at the standards.

It's best to jump to Math 8 / 7A / 7H at school or home, and fill in gaps with material from earlier levels.

Math 1-8 is integrated math and then Algebra 1 and Geometry etc switch to stupid segregated math.

This is exactly what almost everyone has been begging for for years. Accelerate instead of skip.
Give the kids a chance to learn more in class, review and extend each year, expose kids to math 8 before Algebra, and slow down for students who can't handle it.

Good to hear. It made a lot of sense to me when they explained it.

Same (probably same school). Everyone took accelerated sixth grade math, and if you met several criteria -- grade in 6th grade math, PARCC score, placement test score, summer work -- you are placed into seventh grade algebra. There was no special summer math program for the kids directed into algebra in 7th grade, just more lessons to do on the Delta math app.

The elite private school programs teach integrated math. Mathematicians prefer it and practice it. The boundaries between subjects in math are artificial and interfere with understanding.

BASIS DC teaches advanced integrated math.

+1

It does and it’s one of the things I like about Basis. I think DCI does too. But it gets tricky when a kid switches to a DCPS HS because they don’t have a credit of Geometry on their transcript. That’s why kids retake it even though geometry is integrated throughout middle school at Basis.

My Deal 7th grader also placed into Algebra I but has yet to receive their new class assignment and is still stuck going to Math 7. Does anyone know when Deal students that need a schedule change will get their new class assignments or whom I should contact about this?

Ms Baxter and/or their current math teacher

I have a 7th grader who took Math 8 over the summer and is now in Algebra 1. Just got an email saying they can place into concurrent Algebra 1 and Geometry but would have to skip foreign language. We’re not going to do it. It’s too bad because my kids’ music and PE classes seem worthless this year, and we would definitely take Geometry over those.

Apparently DCPS will no longer allow double-blocking in math after this year. So that effectively spells the end of Algebra 2 at Deal after SY2024-25.

We change chancellors like we change the sheets. A) lobby for it if it is important to you B) wait it out
