| Great. Fairfax is one its way to becoming MoCo 2.0. |
DP. A better plan would be to identify the gaps not covered by current programs and identify specific things that these low income families need the cash for and then supply those things rather than providing cash. A lot of people are low-income because they are dysfunctional, can't manage budget, have misplaced priorities, addictions of various types whether booze/substances/gambling/etc. |
+1 I work in federal government procurement and there are so many hoops we have to jump through to make sure tax players dollars are used responsibly. We would never get away with just trusting people to use the money wisely. I'm closer to the left than right, and this sort of thing is frustrating. I think it's performative, actually, and does more harm than good in the long run because it makes so many people mad and distrustful of government programs. |
That is EXACTLY what I am afraid of. |
Yes. I also fear it feeds into conservative rants about people on food stamps buying STEAK! Buying LOBSTER! OMG how dare they. If we make sure the poor have basic needs met, most good people cannot object to those things. Food, health care, housing, clothing, clean water to drink (ahem). Most good people would agree they don't want to see little kids hungry, sick, homeless, etc. You can at least try to appeal to their sense of right and wrong. But you start talking about just giving their parents cash and you are inviting fury about how that cash is spent. |
ask MoCo how they ended up getting several participants bumped off Medicaid because they now made too much. idiots |
It may work for the few who get it. Extending it county wide would require the budget to grow by a third. |
Then, they can grow up and expect the taxpayers to fund their college education. And, maybe their house too. Why work when the tax payers pay for everything you want or need? I am so glad I moved out of Fairfax County. |
I'm pp quoted. WaPO "also report a “lightening of people’s mental load.” Alexandria residents say they no longer need to worry about food prices when they are at the grocery store, Mullen said, or report that they are now able to spend more time with their children because the payments have allowed them to quit second jobs. 2nd jobs? The fact is one low income household wih 1 child or 2 and 2 adults could have 1 adult employed. |
| Yet another reason to take my money and flee democrat controlled regions of the country |
| It's not going to help except if you also provide financial literacy. Someone not used to having much money isn't going to benefit like they think and once the pilot is over it's going to do more harm than good. The other issue is if their income is just on the limits for food stamps, child care, housing and medical it could impoverish people more if they lose those benefits as that amount would not cover what they lose. |
Doing things like increasing the amount of food stamps a family long term would be far more beneficial. Or, increasing the income limits for other means tested programs like child care, housing and medical (especially medical). |
Damn and I thought inflation was mostly a result of greedy cooperations. |
Corporations can only be as greedy as the money that is being printed and out there sloshing around. |
Exactly this. |
