nope this is censorship. And the books I have to remove aren't "woke."
although I'm not sure why you thinks its an insult to call me woke. I hope I am.
heaven forbid we consider ALL points of view, not just yours.

If a baker in Colorado can refuse to make a wedding cake for a made up gay couple based on beliefs, you should be able to refuse to remove books

What is the argument? Is it trampling on your First Amendment rights to keep books in a public school library?

I don't think OP has much of a choice. She may speak out, and lose her job because of it. They'll find a reason to fire her.

I understand the dilemma, but I'd remove the books, OP. Band together with other librarians to protest, but don't quit your job or get fired over this. You can find ways to speak out against this censorship without sacrificing yourself and your family's welfare.

Very tough, and you have my sympathies, OP.

They may give me a list, but every school library has books it in that are not in others. That means, I need to read most of them.
But, I will be the one physically removing them, and that's the sucky part.

Your removal process is going to involve making a big pile at the front of the library where you ordinarily have book displays and putting signage on the pile that says “For removal/deaccession, required by [citation to law].” I mean, the books have to go somewhere while you figure all of this out!

Then find the biggest On Social Media people you know in your area and make sure they see it.

And/or, if you have a sufficiently anonymous Twitter acct yourself, tweet it and tag in the ALA and its current President (who is very online).

I hate social media, but this is a good use of it. Try it, OP. Politicians hate having their hypocrisy made public. When I say hypocrisy, I mean they crow that they love our country and hate censorship, but they are just protecting them l'il babies from nasty books that will hurt their growing minds. Put it in their faces. Maybe find a photo of the bonfires the Nazis made of books they didn't like, and juxtapose the two. The parallels are real, sadly.

If so, join the many other librarians faced with this and publicize the hell out of it; start your own independent non-school library where anyone can read the 11,000 books. You don’t have to read any of them, that’s not the point. Librarians are under attack and yes you should at least fight on this hill.

Reading is fundamental. She isn’t removing 11,000 books from her library. Her library CONSISTS of 11,000 books, which she needs to go through to cull certain titles a legislature has decided shouldn’t be there. It’s most likely material in a school deemed inappropriate for children because it deals with issues like transgenderism or sexually explicit material. I don’t agree with it but no one has banned 11,000 books.

School librarians in Texas are being told that they can not have anything on their shelves that they have not, themselves, read, and have promised are free of X, Y, and Z (which are not well defined).

Which, since no one can read 11,000 books between now and school opening, means that kids will lose access to many many books. The fact that the legislature isn't banning them by title, doesn't mean much.

And just to be clear, most school librarians are in positions with pensions. So, a librarian protesting this and losing her job, would be like if you stood up to something and the consequence was to empty your retirement accounts.

And how do you regard Martin Luther King as a historical figure, just out of curiosity?

Is this Florida? Just curious. I feel so sad for our country. There’s some books I don’t take out for my kids for whatever reason but that’s my choice. M

What exactly are the children being protected from?

Anonymous wrote:Assuming that OP is a librarian: thank you for being willing to make a stink about this. Agreed that you should definitely make an issue about it and get the press involved. Use your name and face. Censorship of books should not be happening in a democratic society.

I don't hire librarians, but I am sure that someone would be happy to hire someone who believed this strongly in freedom of information access.

Plus a million!!

Please explain how this is not the very definition of censorship.

Or it could be super religious propoganda books that the local libs want removed. This could go either way as Library serves the local residents.
Maybe OP can connect to a diff library in the district to swap books unwanted by their locals?
