Do any northern virginia public schools still have half-day kindergarten?

I still think it is BS. If one school is full day, they should all be full day. Every child has the right to the same curriculum and pacing of that curriculum. Just because a child lives in a "better" zip code does not mean that child needs less instruction, and/or time to learn the material. That really pisses me off, and no...I don't think it is fair!

You are incorrect. Every child has a right to a free and appropriate education. There is no right for an identical curriculum and pacing.

Half day instruction is not an appropriate education.

Ah ah disability lingo. FDK initially had some rational except for Westbriar. FCPS had children go from full day headstart to 1/2 day k while Westbriar [nice neighborhoods in Vienna and some were from Great Falls at the time] had full day.

So there you have it - a spun ky well connected neighborhood that got bumped to another school had FDK long before genuinely poor children in many areas. The problem with FRAPE applied to full and 1/2 day is the objective measurements like the DRA, SOL's, plus the GT testing [or portfolios ] don't support the necessity of full day for all. There are laws on all sorts of things but FDK for Silverbrook just peeves me . On top of that middle school.

FCPS is suggesting that additional schools get FDK as part of their recommendation in the Southwest Boundary recommendations. Specifically, VA Run, Greenbriar West, and Willow Springs would get it for the upcoming school year. Union Mill would get it the following year. The reason for the suggestion that additional schools get FDK is because some students would be switching from schools with FDK to schools without FDK.

They had originally wanted to phase full-day K into all schools, but they stopped due to budget cuts. Therefore, the schools in McLean, Vienna and Great Falls generally have 1/2 day K. For now, full-day K is saved. Who knows for next year.

This is not necessarily true....Waynewood Elementary is full day (with a very upper middle class demographic and know as one of the best in the county) while Stratford Landing aroudn the corner from Waynewood is half day. This makes no sense.

Uhhh...not true on the poorer neighborhoods. Waynewood Elementary is full day and that is hardly a poor neighborhood. Less than 10% are on free or reduced lunch.

Actually, it's less than 3% and hope that there is no way they will remove the full-day K program from that school. Our DD is going there next year and she is ready to be in a full-day school curriculum. I think it's crazy that all of the schools aren't full-day K.
