Racism In The DC Area

This is the only place I’ve ever experienced open racism against white people. It’s rather jarring. I kind of just shrug and move on because I know if I were POC I’d have experienced far more open racism in my life, but I also think a nice goal for our society is no racism against anyone. Maybe that’s unrealistic.

I teach early childhood education in DC and regularly have children start the year who tell me that they hate white people. They're obviously hearing that type of language at home.

Inside the D.C. government as well. Take the Washington Informer article on Hardy, where a DCPS administrator says DCPS shouldn't have supported the interests of Hardy parents, and only did so because many of them were white. It has this quote: "Hardy is diverse in the sense that 40% of the families are white. That 40% feels like 90% because of how loud and connected they are.”

Switch races, and it would be a scandal that a DCPS administrator said that. All of the Council would have demanded action be taken on the matter. But as it is? No one even noticed.

Yea these comments are part of the problem. It’s not really untrue that DCPS is more willing to cater to richer/whiter schools but wording as though this is the fault of the white people is problematic. Any proactive parent will be local and fight for their kids to have a better education and nobody is to blame but the school system when those fights are repeatedly only won by one demographic.

This is why rich white people in DC end up getting hit with a brick "at random." But honestly DC is so segregated that nearly all aspects of city life revolve around race so it's no surprise that everyone who lives there thinks the entire country engages in systemic racism. You have to go all the way to Baltimore before you even see working class people of all races mingling with middle class people for example.

Not quite all the way to Baltimore, you can find it in Bowie.

I have lived a sheltered life born and raised in North Potomac, a wealthy suburb, so I am genuinely clueless of how things really go in this place outside of my little bubble. I have taken an interest in the topic of race relations throughout America as of late, and it has really shaken me out of my sheltered slumber of how things really work in parts of America in the modern day. I for one was genuinely shocked when I learned that segregation was rife in MoCo before the 1960s, and that there were instances of cross burnings and vandalism of Black homes around the DC area when they started moving into White areas after desegregation. For POCs on this forum (especially Black Americans), have you ever experienced overt racism around the DC area? how deep does the rot truly go? I am also interested in learning more about the history of segregation and the Black experience in MoCo during the Jim Crow Era, as it seems they have tried to brush this dark chapter under the rug and it is very hard to find info regarding this on the internet. I fear these instances are only scratching a surface a tad bit.

Growing up in Mt Rainier, my family wasn't allowed to join the local private pool because of our race. PG Pool was explicit that Blacks were not allowed. Today, my cousins can't join for the same reason, it's just implicit.

Did your cousins put their names on the wait list? Check the web site.

No, because my family never felt comfortable even considering after the humiliating way we were denied back in the day.

Then, you have nothing to complain about.

How did this thread become a collection of white people asserting that we are the real victims of racism in the D.C. area? Ridiculous.

I don’t understand what you’re getting at. Working class people and middle class people of any race rarely commingle. It’s not really racial. Those two classes don’t cross paths that often (different neighborhoods, different jobs, etc.) so it just doesn’t happen.
