Will police even bother to recover a stolen car if they know the location? I certainly would not go into the dangerous parts of DC by myself to attempt to recover a car.

The housing voucher program is bringing the dangerous parts of DC to your neighborhood. Nowhere is safe anymore.

Research do not bear this out. Please stop promoting untrue fear.

Research? What research? There is more crime across the city. Please explain this research .

People will be outraged if the insurance spirals out of control

I feel like Kia and Hyundai were recently found by thr Biden admin to be the easiest cars to steal / Hotwire.

So it is the car’s fault for all these car thefts.

It’s not the people’s fault.

- Most stolen cars are NOT recovered.
- Cars are shipped out of the US via Baltimore, Jersey, and several other shady port cities.

- This is NOT an issue of poor people and kids joyriding. These are a small fraction of what happens when a car is stolen.

I live in arlington and have a few friends whose cars have been stolen here and they have traced them to dc. Police didn’t help. They went and retrieved the cars themselves in very bad areas. Pp is right that you don’t want it back.

+1 loudoun. An acquaintance watched her stolen car make its way to DC via an AirTag and police wouldn’t intervene.

Police don’t bother to do shucks except coke to the aftermath and write a report.

You can’t chase a car that is stolen. The thief would take off and the result ls could be fatal to innocents. Remember what happened recently to the car chase in Rock Creek.

We live in the city and weren't helped. We eventually recovered our own destroyed car. DC considers it an insurance matter. Shows zero understanding of being violated or ones livlihood disrupted

Car was recently stolen in DC. I was very happy as it had LOJACK. However, it turns out that MPD does not employ the LOJACK detectors.

So I contacted LOJACK and they were able to provide the general area of the car, but the police were not interested and as stated above, they don't have the readers anyway.

The city uses over 140 traffic cameras to read license plates for issuing tickets. NOT ONE of them is capable of reading the license plate and alerting police to a stolen vehicle. NOT ONE.

Of the 400 additional cameras the Mayor is purchasing, NOT ONE will be linked into any sort of auto crime prevention TF. DC wants you to simply call your insurance company.

The person who caused the wreck in Rock Creek *was not* chased. These lunatics are going to wreck regardless of whether or not they are chased, so why not just try and catch them?

We need bollards throughout the city. You just deploy bollards around the stolen car area and then funnel vehicles through license plate reader intersections with cameras designed to queue police immediately. When a stolen car passes a license plate reader the bollards one block down are employed and keep the cars contained until police arrive.

It is 2023 and our city is making money hand over fist on traffic cameras. Car theft and car jacking is simply a matter of choice. Our city would rather it be a citizen problem rather than force the city to focus on anything not related to development.

Much like stopping the use illegal dealer tags (and thus making it quasi-legal to not need to register your car in DC), ending car theft would be inequitable.

The purpose of traffic cameras is revenue generation.

True, but if we were smart enough and determined to do so, we could use the cameras for additional purposes.

The cameras are installed and operated under contract with a third party company who the District shares ticket revenue with.
