Schools that focus on community service

Doing true service in your community is very important to many colleges, probably only less important than getting high grades in advanced classes and being a sports recruit.

If you look at the common data set , you can see how each college considers volunteer work. For example, my kid is at Davidson (which is officially non-secular but still has strong ties to the Presbyterian Church), and their common data set says that (1) class rigor, recommendations, character and volunteer work are the most important factors; (2) essays, extracurricular activities, and talent are important; and (3) grades, test scores, and alumnae status are considered, while other factors like work experience are not considered. I am not sure how much they actually follow these criteria since the admitted students seem to have pretty strong grades, but at least their official policy is to consider volunteer work more.
