So they are a grade behind.

Why do they do this, for athletes?

-to catch kids up academically. 9th grade is easier the second time around
-also--to create bigger, better athletes.

There's really no down side for the school.

I work at a HS and the down side that I am beginning to see is 20 year old GROWN MEN mingling in halls with 14 year old freshman. The gap between freshmen and seniors has always been stark, but reclassing is making it worse.
We also have a 16 yo freshman that is struggling to connect with his peers in class. It's already sensitive time for adolescents and reclassing for some is just not worth it.

I have never seen a kid reclass for athletic reasons such that they are 3 years older. The 20 year old thing is something that you made up in your head.

My child is in a class with a 15 year old in 8th grade. He will be 19 1/3 upon graduation.

These are children still in school. Not college kids.

You run into a number of rules on eligibility if you reclass once in high school so people do it in eighth grade. Very common for lacrosse. Basically 1/2 the kids at Mater Dei for instance reclass at some point before going to high school. Same for some other catholic K8s. Also common at the IAC schools in 7th or 8th. Rare to do it later because IAC and WCAC have eligibility rules that come into play (although they aren’t always enforced).

It is not common. I know of one case where someone repeated 11th at the same school. The student had a young birthday, there were some issues outside school, and so the 1st time at 11th did not go very well.

Repeating 11th worked out in the end. Student got an Econ degree from a good public university and got a good job in finance/banking…
