The censorship of Roald Dahl

Ridiculous that the term can't be used.

This. People have gone nuts.

I am totally down with censoring the Bible, which is a huge source of division in this world. It makes a lot of people very uncomfortable. Since those are the criteria by people like Ron DeSantis and book-banning fans — nothing that is divisive or causes discomfort — the Bible must go.

Lots of works get updates to appeal to a new audience and the norms of the day. The fact is most people don’t even notice.

Conservative Christians laid down the template for book banning. They don’t have a leg to stand on.

This does happen regularly. Common example: translation of historical works.

There’s a huge difference between updating translations of historical works and directly modifying an author’s words. Do you not see that?

Peak capitalism. If this what the publisher thinks will sell more books...

You think the bible you read hasn't been edited and changed over time? That's hilarious.

Dr Suess books were censored and edited too, I fail to see the big deal.

Ultimately, Dahl was a raging antisemite and his works need to be understood in that context.

It really hasn't been. What proof do you have that it has been?

This. A bit of tweaking means today’s kids will read them.

You are woefully undereducated. How did you miss basic World History courses in secondary school? I ask this seriously. Were you home schooled? Did you attend a fundamentalist religious school?

I asked for proof. It seems you're the one undereducated. The "edited/changed Bible" is a bedtime story atheists like to tell themselves.

BTW, I attended publics all through grad school.

So you think it was written in English? Even if you do, you must be aware of all the different versions? Why do you think the King James Bible exists?

And you must realize that a translator doesn't do word-for-word substitutions. There are idioms and phrases that are changed to work for the language of translation.

NP. This is hilarious that you link to a wikipedia article on the bible. You assured us that you were a bible scholar because you took a world history course in high school.

Today's kids already read them.

It isn't just fat and gender neutral Oompa loompas. There are silly changes to the description of the witches regarding the use of wigs and being bald. Other changes as well.

I agree it's a way to move books. Loyalists will buy existing copies, other groups will buy the new revisions. Then they will get remade again by another publisher a few years down the line. He's obviously not providing new material, so it's time to wash and rinse the old stuff.
