This is OP. We checked it out and she wasn’t a fan-too small and not wowed by facilities.

Vandy and Clairmont have greater than 25% ED rates.

Yeah, not really. Especially the Claremont colleges and other SLACs. ED has lots of recruited athletes and the ED applicant pool is getting larger. Doubt any of the Claremont schools will have anything near a true 25% ED acceptance rate. Unhooked DD was really interested but after really looking into the numbers, decided her ED chances at CMC weren't as good as at some others.

But the immediate area around it in Eagle Rock is not safe

Looked fine to me, it’s a typical urban campus near an artsy neighborhood . If that scares you, not the school for your family.

What about St. Olaf? It was recently suggested to us by a counselor as a potential fit for our math-loving kid who wants to attend a smaller school.

OP, smart to be doing this. FWIW, DD's school college counselor told her to have her list run from reaches to 30% acceptance rate. While DD got into her ED where her GPA/scores put her in the upper quadrant, IDK what would have happened if that had not worked out. I thought her list should have been more broad with schools in the 50-75% acceptance rate for likelies while DD, DH, and college counselor were on the same page. Again, it all worked out, but I know a number of kids where this did not happen.

Agree, lucky it worked out, nothing higher than 30 percent acceptance rate is crazy risky.

Right?? DH attended an elite college in another era. He just didn't understand how much college admissions has changed even though one of his close friend's DC had a brutal experience as the parents assumed that since they were top NESCAC/Ivy grads, then all would be okay for the kid. It wasn't.

I'm still kinda shocked that DD's college counselor advised this and that DD was going for it, even though she knew a girl a grade ahead with a very comparable academic/EC profile to her and was dinged everywhere but a 50% accept rate university! DD would invoke her as a cautionary tale, then turn around and agree to everything her college counselor was saying about her list!

I still think "Phew!"

We really liked St. Olaf. Our DC got into another SLAC ED but St. Olaf seemed very good.

My DC is at Occidental. Safety in Eagle Rock has not been an issue at all.
