+1 My relative pays $600/month in a nice neighborhood in Montgomery County for a simple one bedroom. |

This is stupid - nobody knows the future.
The stock market could very well be flat for the next decade, but I guarantee you none of the posters here are factoring that into their calculations. |
If you look over the history of the stock market, of ANY 15 year period, including during the Great Depression, it's always up. So while true, nobody knows the future, history gives us a pretty good idea! |

We are 55 and 57 and plan to retire in 2 1/2 years. We currently have:
$2M 401k/IRA $300K regular investments/savings $500K home equity --Our kids are in college or will be in college when we retire. Their college is fully covered by 529 plan not listed above. --We will have a very small pension of about $600/mo. --We live on a salary of $180K now for family of 5 (with $20K going toward retirement savings, so really less). |
| I just left my very high stress very high paying job at 45. I’m going to pivot and do something entirely different for drastically less pay. But we have about $35M (maybe a bit more) currently, so I could retire now. |

I’m thinking at 62. I’ll get $9K/month in inflation adjusted pension and fed/military health care. $1M in TSP. $1M in home equity. Kids all out of college.
I like my job and wouldn’t mind working longer. DH would like to travel more, so working a regular job won’t really work in retirement. |

54 & 61

Pension eligible at 55. $2.1M in traditonal 401K's $1M in taxable brokerage $300K in cash $60K or so in Roth $1.1M in home equity Pension fv =$1.7M. @55 = $60K, wait until 62 it is $113K. | 62. 14 million. 2 million in home equity. |
It could. Of course that has never happened before in our history. Could something that has never happened happen? Sure. But it is really unlikely. |
| both 55 with 8mil |

62
$5-6M (future dollars) plus $66.5k (today’s dollars) pension. Hopefully the pension will increase with future grade increases. |
It's probably much more likely than most people think. Even recently the US stock market lost 6% from 1998-2008. We've had quite a run recently, so it's easy to forget the risks. Nobody know how the US will perform in the future, as it's nothing special. I don't think Japan has fully recovered from their market peaking in the late 80's (early 90's?). That's a loooong time! The Japanese always thought they would be number one as well. |
| Single mom with 1 child. Will semi retire at 53 with a pension of around 7000 a month. Have about 1 mil saved. Will get lower cost health care from my job. Plan on doing a fun, no stress job (do they exist?) for 2-3 days a week until around 65. |
+1. I don’t LOVE my job but I like it enough to keep going as long as I can. And when I stop wanting to do the 9-5 grind I will start consulting or go all in on a hobby or volunteering or help with childcare for grandkids. Don’t want to get into a lifestyle where all I do is watch TV all day |
^ To add, some people are disciplined enough that even when their calendar is completely empty, they fill it meaningfully. I am not one of those people I need structure and commitments or I will devolve into a couch potato.
