In past years, I have never failed to give the guy about $5 cash from my pocket after he heaved the tree on top of my car. They're racking up mandatory service hours, fwiw, for their religious high school, and they're getting a wage on top of that.

I feel weird tipping kids who are doing service work, now that I think about it.

Dc restaurants should raise the prices to Swiss levels if it means we get waiters that are in shape and multilingual

One thing I love about Switzerland is service staff seem in shape and healthy and normal. It makes me want to go out more

In the us, service staff almost seem to be a new form of indentured servitude— it’s sad.

This isn't a server. This is a cashier who is paid a salary and still demanding a tip for ringing you up. Service is taking your order, bringing you food, water, drinks, silverware and your food and cleaning it up after you are done.

I tip. My DS worked as a barista, and tips were a huge part of her pay. Her base pay was crap, and she could not pay her rent without tips. I pay 15% for takeout, and 20% in restaurants. I tip $1 for my lattes, nothing for pouring me a cup of coffee.

You get wages. If you don't like your low wage, get another job. Tipping enables employers to pay crappy wages, because of people cannot make ends meet on wages at a place where they work then they won't work there job.. the employer will be forced to pay higher wages. But that never happens because we have this asinine culture of tipping that is out of control.

Tipping culture originated from racism too. Employers hired black people with lower wages and forced them to make up the difference with tips. So why do we still have this completely stupid relic left over from America's racist past?

I'm so done with tipping culture. If you are a cashier, barista, mechanic, hair dresser, garbage man, bellhop, etc.etc..No tips for you. Demand better wages if you don't like it or find another job. It's not the customer's responsibility to make sure you make enough wages.
