Question: Do you work part-time in your retirement and if so, what do you do? Do you work in your field or in something completely different? How long did you take a break , if any, before you found another paying job?

Inquiring minds what to know.

If you need to be bringing money in, I’d keep working in your fed job.

I recently retired at 50 from the feds and I make the same amount of money working as a contractor 3 days/week as I did working full time. My spare time has obviously doubled and it has been great, no regrets whatsoever. I'll probably fully retire in a couple of years.

Can I ask what field - in general? And do you have a clearance? This sounds ideal.

Not me, but somewhat similar in that I make a decent hourly wage ($150/hr) part-time now. That compensation is very likely related to my clearances, which are required for my part-time job.

Decent? ha! That wage probably puts you in the top 5%.

If you have a clearance, there are a ton of slacker type jobs paying $30-40/hr. Before I retired, I had almost 30k in deductions/yr coming out of my check. Previous fed salary of 100k minus 30k deductions=70k. Fed annuity= 45k. So, part-time gig only has to pay 25k. The only downside is that I no longer contribute to my TSP, but it's almost irrelevant at this point because I've saved so much over the years.

Just curious about fun things people find to do..not necessarily in their field of expertise. I can do what I did in the feds part-time, but would be interested in exploring completely different areas too. Not into retail though. Only part-time gigs. Not too terribly physical or on my feel all day..

Thanks,

How come your pension doesn’t sound that good? Do you need more time in grade for more $? I know it’s tough but maybe RIP for the next three years? Wearing headphones helps
Second the rec for contract investigations— lots of companies you could work for with set hours & boring but steady money

Would love to hear more about this.

Hi. I saw this thread and recently retired from the Fed. My job was very stressful and I worked with two folks who hardly did anything. My morale was so low and I was miserable. So I left. I am 63. I know I am “ retirement age” but still need to use my brain. Interested in what others are doing?

NP here. DH is retiring at 52 with 70% of his income as pension. It really doesn’t make sense for him to continue working his high stress job full time for that extra 30%.

How is he doing that on FERS??
