Re: your question about HS volunteers.:

HS students can sign up to volunteer once the MS in the same cluster asks for volunteers. An Assistant Principal, Counselor, teacher can recommend students if needed. The HS earns SSL hours or used to earn SSL, and are excused from classes. HS volunteers assist teachers or adult chaperones who are supervised by a MS teacher. So, they are not typically left alone with the 6th grade student, tho some duties include walking a student to the nurse station at ODE, bathroom if they are away from bathrooms (hiking), sitting at the dining table during meals, and are sleeping in same cabin as 6th grade students who are supervised in the cabin by an adult volunteer.

Adult volunteer completes volunteer interest application (such as a Google form indicating their interest to volunteer), background check, fingerprinting, attending adult volunteer info sessions led by the MS's ODE lead teacher to go over duties, responsibilities, expectations etc. An adult volunteer who is staying overnight will have a cabin group. A volunteer who is staying overnight and also during the day will have a cabin group and an instructional group
(assisting teachers with activity under guidance from an expert at the ODE site),
corral students, make sure they stay in line, assist in taking them to nurse station or bathroom as needed, assist in dining hall serving food.

Do you need a mattress pad or is a sleeping bag enough?

My kid at a different school went to Camp Letts this fall. I was a chaperone. It was an excellent educational, social, and life experience. I have nothing but positive things to say. It was really well done. My child enjoyed it and met a lot of new kids.

Did anyone have their kid go in January. Seems a bit counterproductive to do "Outdoor" Ed in January in rockville. What kind of activities are kids really going to want to hang outdoors if it's 30degrees out. Apparently my kid goes to a MCPS school where they get the crappiest time of year for it. It's frustrating because it coupd be a good experince in say September-November or April-June like all these posters here have mentioned but January really?

Poor schools go in fall/winter and the rich schools go in Spring.

Outdoor ed is ridiculous. There are behavioral issues with kids and they just get away with it.

And they expect parent chaperones to mitigate students who have issues without revealing to the chaperones what issues. Some parents know how problematicr certain students are because their kids tell them or those students' issues have long been known. An adult of each kid attending should be required to volunteer for two hours minimum.
