Small, non-preppy school not far from Virginia for average students.

What is an indie scene? Like artsy? I heard VCU is artsy.

I think that OP is using "indie" to mean non-Greek oriented. At least that's what I took it to mean.

My kids liked Mary Washington and SMCM. Very small, similar vibe. No Greek life (yaaa!), good academics. Both are very nice schools. SMCM has a beautiful, rural campus right on the water, if that matters to your DD. Mary Washington is in Fredericksburg, so has a bit more urban/suburban vibe. I'd recommend both to your DD. Take a look!

VCU? Or JMU (though they aren't very "indie"?

Temple. It's not exactly small, but it's no mega-university either.

Op, what do you mean by "indie"?

Yes, I googled it, but nothing came up that had to do with college.

My kids liked both those schools as well! One ended up at Mary Washington. It's in a small historic town and has a beautiful, classic campus. Not urban at all.

Maybe UNC Asheville?

Nope. It’s small. But it’s a very “crunchy” school. Opposite of what Op wants.

Elon
HigH Point
Denison

Sorry! I read to fast. Thought OP wanted preppy

Agree UNC Asheville
Guilford
Brevard
Juanita
Wooster

I don't know if the students at Brevard are crunchy, but the area totally is, so I would assume that would be a draw. There are a lot of outdoor activities between the Pisgah National Forest and French Broad River and the town has a cute little downtown shopping area. We always go to the soda shop when we're visiting - kitchy, old school diner. OP should totally check it out.

I think of indie as implying more like hipster, sort of grunge. I suggested SMCM and that could work if outdoorsy, crunchy is the vibe but OP may want something more urban, in which case VCU but the size seems less like the preference.
