When did these organization skills get taught?

Pushing this thread up again. Does anyone have any suggestions for an executive functioning coach or class etc. my 8th grader definitely needs!

The Study Pro, McLean.

But you should also make a new post for more responses. Try the Special Needs forum also. There is a wealth of experience over there in dealing with EF issues.

What you describe in your original post is how I operated in college, and how my niece works in her private high school; she had a class that taught such methods -- I think similar to what Burke offers their students. I've had to teach my son the methods I used; his school has not yet taught or required it, and I don't think they will.

Burke doesn’t offer this to students during the school year. I’m teaching my Burke kid how to organize loose papers from each subject in their back pack. Kid’s cubby at school is also a mess.

My child took this course over the summer and found it helpful. Burke also has dedicated learning support specialists that teach a study skills course (all 9th graders take it) and can meet with students individually for additional support. I’m glad they offer this! I think some study skills are different nowadays with the prevalence of technology. I don’t see as much reliance on notes, flash cards, etc.

They don’t have multiple specialists per division. When does your kid meet individually with said specialists? It’s sad schools still rely on technology despite what we know about screen time. What happened to writing things down? So much research shows you remember like 85% more if you write it down.

Where does one find an executive functioning/skills coach for kids/students?

We did The Study Pro in MCLean (even though we live in DC). A week long course in August before school started. Very helpful. DC is better at listening to others than parents.

Thanks. I will post in special needs as well. I have a kid at a Big 3 so was also curious if folks at private schools had found anything particularly useful as well. Will look at Studypro.

This was all in Middle School. My DD who is now in 8th still hasn't learned any of this. My dd is in AOB schools if anyone has specific comments but, I am curious if they even teach this anymore.

They start whenever you start parenting and teaching it OP. Don’t expect much from these schools.
