When you don't allow test retakes kids just move on to the next topic even if they failed the first one and doesn't afford you any opportunity to really focus on the areas you are struggling in.


Yes, and this is particularly important in math where the concepts build over time. Our current group of eighth graders are in a unique position. Their fifth grade year ended thanks to COVID with no math SOL, no math inventory but more importantly they missed out on two months of final concepts. Their six grade year was completely online, not a developmentally appropriate way to learn math concepts. Last year they were finally in the classroom but many math teachers were astonished at how behind they were, and some can’t even understand the basic order of operations. It’s important that the schools put in things to help them really master the concepts to set them up for success in the future
