Tell me about SSFS

What an excellent event. The student leader was ultra impressive. DH and I were impressed with how comfortable wveryone felt there. Even down to “the moment of silence” which felt so natural. SSFS is not like any other school we applied to. Tough decision for 9th between Burke and SSFS

+1 incredible, welcoming and warm event last night. We were sold. Our DC will be attending SSFS for 9th

Warm, thoughtful, lots of electives but with good differentiation of core academic subjects especially math. We are looking at middle school. Any present families that could give thoughts would be great. We are picking between SSFS, SAES, and Field and live in MoCo. SAES is the closest but our kid is not athletic at all and a little quirky (though sweet) so we felt like SAES may not be the best fit.

We attended as well and could have written your post except we’re looking at the upper school and deciding between SAES and SSFS.

I'm so happy that people are seeing these schools for all that they are. I loved both on tours and DC attends one now. We are very happy.

Any more specifics on academics in HS?

I am interested in HS too. A friend mentioned the new head of US was very good. Is it the right balance of challenge and exploration and social/emotional for a very bright, kind kid?

This was our biggest challenge with SSFS was that we just didn't know anybody who had kids there because we are a close-in Bethesda family and the people we know with kids in private school are all the DC school crowd. If people are willing to go "far out" they look at St. Andrew's. That said, our commute to SSFS is 30 minutes so doesn't seem unreasonable and the bus picks up close to us and that makes the commute 40 minutes (so not much more). But if felt like a great combination of challenging for the kids that need it and centered for all of them.

Like PP said it seems as though most people I know are in DC schools closer in town, so it’s hard to learn too much about the school. But of people I have met who are at SSFS, I have never heard a negative comment. Everybody seems to love it. It’s a hidden gem.

Is it challenging?

"New" head of US is leaving after 1 year. Lots of transition in that division.

If you look at insta for seniors, they have gotten into pretty good colleges so far. Doubt that would happen if they weren’t in challenging courses.

The head of upper school is not somewhat new, she was new to the position. She has been with the school for the past 26 years and is leaving to be the Head of school somewhere else. That there does not seem like a loss to me as it means people learn, grow and move on to bigger things.

Every single point of your post is wrong.
