Colby, Bowdoin, Tufts…

Kid would like to attend college outside of Virginia - and really likes Colby. Not interested in learning more about Swarthmore, Davidson, Villanova, or any Ohio schools🫤. Planning to visit a few campuses this fall, ideally a mix of 4-5 campuses in the east, and then go from there.

Have aby of the suggestions so far been of interest?

Check out University of Vermont. It’s on our kid’s list along with Wes, Vassar, Middlebury. It’s relatively small for a state university, and it has an honors program that admits just 200-300 each year. So seems like you could get some of the SLAC feel there.

Are you coming from a New England private? My kid is at an excellent public and neither Colby nor Bowdoin has taken a single applicant from our school in the past five years. It is hard to overstate how few kids are accepted. If your kid is not a sports recruit you need some other options.

Suggest looking at Naviance sooner rather than later. It puts the odds into perspective.

My kid was WL at Midd but accepted to 3 Ivy/T10. Known public magnet school. And, she had really connected with the head of department at Midd who was very enthusiastic about her and gave her a lot of his time.

These schools also love the kids from the DC privates (NCS, STA, Sidwell, GDS). They take kids around the 60% at these schools---GPA in the 3.7 range.

Very reasonable advice, although applying ED to Colby substantially increases an applicant's chances for an offer of admission.

Mt Holyoke or Smith for women. Tufts and MHC, when I went there, had a lot of crossover.

It has top notch academics with a strong economics department and a very well connected, high achieving alumni network. It's pretty campus looks like it could fit well in New England and is only 20 minutes outside of Charlotte in a cute (and safe) college town with strong town/gown relations. Awesome climate (winter temps in the 60s not unheard of) compared to the New England schools and a Lake Campus on Lake Norman for the students to enjoy. Great school spirit and traditions plus Division 1 sports with basketball being the big draw. Admissions wise it is very competitive with an acceptance rate around 17% but is, for now, an easier admit than some of the elite NESCACs.

Not OP but Davidson sounds like a potential fit for my cold weather adverse rising HS student who is looking at smaller LACs. Anyone know what the political leanings are among the student body at Davidson? Appears the school has longstanding ties to the Presbyterian Church not that it in and of itself means a lot these days.

Davidson College used to lean conservative, now it is right in the middle or a bit to the liberal side.

A kid who would enjoy Colby would probably enjoy Colgate

Seems reasonable to me even though neither school lists the other as an overlap.

Colby overlap schools (students who apply to Colby College also tend to apply to these schools) : Brown, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, & Boston College.

Colgate University overlaps: Middlebury, Boston College, Dartmouth, Tufts, Bowdoin, Cornell, Brown, & Hamilton

Middlebury College & Boston College, Brown, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, & Hamilton are the overlap schools in common for Colgate & Colby--although neither lists the other as an overlap.

OP here. Thanks for the suggestions, especially to those who responded with mid- Atlantic and Pac NW options. Had not heard of Whitman - but kid is going to research it. Reed too small. Haverford looks interesting but kid not jazzed about suburban Philadelphia. It is early, and trying to plan a few fall visits on east coast. Planning Colby, Bowdoin, McGill, and Tufts. Not sure how or why McGill is now on list - but my kid is intrigued. Thanks again!

Haverford location is nice - walkable to shops & restaurants - very near Bryn Mawr and Villanova - easy to get to Philly if desired. For me personally, the other consortium school - Swarthmore - is more remotely located (however campus is lovely). There might be some opportunity to take classes at Penn as well...

Bates and Middlebury seem natural ones to add. If you visit Colgate, include Hamilton - imo it is more similar to Colby, Bowdoin etc than Colgate (Colgate is larger and fraternity heavy, which still may appeal to your child). Skidmore and/or Conn College are good safeties to add.
