I have had excellent luck with Air BnBs in Paris and large cities in Italy. Just read the reviews and ensure there are a lot of reviews.
I was really surprised how few hotels take 4 people - Air BnB just made more sense vs paying for two hotel rooms.
And all of our AirBnBs had A/C.
