Wow, PP

NP and it was hard to know what to wow in that post!

I'm one of the PPs who mentioned the snobby attitude of people in Kensington and this post is exactly the attitude I am referring to. This attitude is not at all abnormal in Kensington.

Everyone in CCV sends their kids to Holy Redeemer. Plenty of ToK folks and Parkwood area folks send their kids to HR as well.

The pecking order of certain neighborhoods and schools is real.

But it’s a great place to live if you can afford it.

Keeps the riff-raff out.

We are moving to Kensington Heights at the end of the month. We purposely targeted this neighborhood due to the schools. We love what we hear about the Spanish immersion program at OTES. We are moving from PG County. While we loved our diverse neighborhood, almost no parents in the area send their kids to the local schools and we didn’t want to pay for private, so we chose to move. I think DCUM in general is a very snobby forum. The neighbors I talked to in Kensington Heights seem to be down to earth and had great things to say about the neighborhood. If someone at St. Paul park occasionally rolls their eyes because we chose to send our kids to OTES/Einstein cluster, then that is their problem, not mine. We are happy and confident about our new neighborhood choice.

Welcome! OTES is great. Haven’t had the experiences people have described in this thread (although I’m sure they happen). Overall it’s been a lovely place to live so far.

LOL - only in the minds of the people who think they're at the top of it.

I'm happy where we live (in-bounds for OTES), but this kind of crap does get old.

We’re close to OTES and this has been a fantastic place to live and raise our kids, who are now in high school at Einstein. We’ve got a tight community, lots of parks, near the cute downtown Kensington, near Wheaton and Forest Glen metros and Kensington MARC, close to Target and Wheaton shopping, lots of libraries, not far from downtown Silver Spring. It’s been a good almost 20 years.

Make sure to join the buy nothing groups! There’s an offshoot group too you should join. Also a home wood/Kensington heights/north Kensington parents group that recently started.

pretty loud near the beltway.

if connecticut ave cuts lanes for bike lanes, will be a problem for commuters with kids in cars or needing a car.

We considered Kensington but ended up in Martin's Addition's in chevy chase and honestly 10/10 recommend. It's a gorgeous community, kids have freedom to run around and play, not a busy area, great schools, walking distance to both DC shopping and brookville market area if you're in need of something quickly. Alot of families are very wealthy but honestly anyone buying a 1M+ house is well off in my opinion so that's the entire area. The families we've met, while many belong to chevy chase country club or send their kids to private schools are very kind, welcoming and good neighbors. For us, we absolutely love the area, love the community and feel as our kids get older we'll all have access to great amenities. Now ehen I go to kensington area I can't imagine living over there as to me it feels so far from where we currently are.

Yes, but Martin’s Additions is more expensive than Kensington. 1.2 won’t get you much in that neighborhood. Someone would have to be willing to settle for a small house that needs work. So if you want more space and an updated home, Kensington is a better deal.

What is funny to me is our income is far higher than friends who live in the town. We just think it’s absurd to spend a million on a house. Don’t think for a minute that incomes on the other side of the tracks are less as often they are not.

Yeah, same. We could afford that much house, but when it buys you so little (other than majority White schools), that's a hard pass.

Also, you can't swing a dead cat in-bounds for OTES without hitting a parent with a PhD. The idea that DCC families are less invested in their children's education is unfounded.
