And when Northwood's new building opens (planned for fall 2025) it is likely some areas currently zoned to Blair will be rezoned to Northwood to relieve some of Blair's overcrowding.

Yeah but not including Takoma Park.

ESS is two blocks from the Blair/Northwood boundary line. It could very easily be rezoned.

I thought MCPS didn’t split towns between schools.

However, it seems most likely the areas closer to Northwood nearer the beltway will be the ones getting trimmed.

The only Blair-zoned areas near the beltway are right next to Blair. Those are the least likely to get "trimmed."

Blair's current location is irrelevant and I disagree since those areas are closest to Northwood which makes the most sense

FYI - we are in the neighborhood right next to Blair - we are zoned for Northwood. Which has been fine. Other kids in our neighborhood are scattered across the DCC schools due to magnets, lottery, etc. All doing well.

They could rezone ESS but not TPMS.

I know many middle schools are split, but ESS feeds into TPMS.

Yes, I know. But the middle school and the high school boundaries are decided separately. They could, as an example, rezone ESS to Northwood but keep its middle school assignment as is.

They could, but it seems pretty unlikely, as that move would fail on all four of the MCPS stated metrics. school utilization, school diversity, student proximity to school, and student assignment stability

On school utilization, moving ESS would not particularly move the needle for Northwood. With only 50-60 graduates per year, moving ESS to Northwood would only net about 240 new students for Northwood.

On diversity, moving ESS to Northwood would make Northwood less diverse by adding Black and brown students to a school that is already majority minority.

On proximity, Blair is more than a mile closer even for the kids closest to the Northwood boundary.

Finally, on school assignment stability, ESS went through a boundary revision relatively recently, the school zone includes parts of Takoma Park, and the community is tightly integrated into the broader Takoma Park community through proximity and the porous nature of the boundary between Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

On every metric, it is suboptimal, which makes me think this is not the direction in which MCPS is going to head. I think it is more likely that the Northwood boundary itself shifts. It's pretty nonsensical, and a legacy of the lack of a comprehensive boundary revision to date. I would not be surprised to see the portions of Northwood cluster closest to DTSS redistricted to Einstein or even BCC.

Makes sense to me. They need to look at the proximity to Northwood. I also don't think proximity to Blair's new location is a consideration. It's service area area is a function of its original location at least until another HS is built in the SE part of the county.

Of course it is a consideration. Each of the schools' locations (in 2024, not 1998) will be a consideration. They will determine where each school's walk zone will be, and try to maximize the number of walkers.

The smaller towns, yes. Not sure where Takoma Park fits in that math.

Takoma Park is a city, just like Rockville or Gaithersburg, both of which are zoned to more than one high school.

And Takoma park borders DC. The closest Montgomery County high school is Blair but it’s still several miles away. There is no where else that Takoma park kids could feasibly go other than Blair without an even longer commute.

Langely Park isn't that far from BCC so busing wouldn't be that bad.

Northwood is literally 5 minutes from Blair.
