Why is my old neighbor mowing his lawn almost every day. Do I have recourse to report him?

I doubt you are going to find any county noise ordinance that allows you to force your neighbor to stop mowing daily.

Talking to him in a CIVIL (which means calm yourself completely and do not go in accusing) is your best chance for success.

Keep your goal in mind (getting him to mow less often) and wipe what you think you are entitled to out of your head before you approach him. That's key if you want any chance of achieving your goal.

Don't even do that. It's a silly request.

I don't have time to talk to him and he is not very pleasant, he constantly complains about the neighbor behind him putting up a new fence. I'd rather let the authorities deal with him.

AUTHORITIES???? LOL.

Are there any rules on this, I understand once or twice a week but almost every day is excessive.

He is retired probably age 60+

Um - what's wrong with you? Is he mowing at like 6 a.m. or in the middle of the night?

I feel for you OP--unnecessary and loud noise is annoying, especially when it occurs regularly. I have a neighbor who blasts music every offing night starting at 9 pm and it drives me insane--I'm trying to relax and get ready for bed and then thump thump thump.

If you were to talk to your neighbor, what would make the situation better for you? If he mowed first thing in the morning, during the lunch hour or in the evening? Could you ask for that? What if you bought him one of those new ultra quiet mowers? Brainstorm what would make the situation better and then approach with that and see if it helps, but I wouldn't approach him until you have a reasonable solution. It sounds like he's bored and needs something to do--could you pay him to mow your lawn or do some other type gardening task so he has something to do besides mow?

Old neighbor is not at all sympathic, can I report him to polizei? I am truly mom of DC urban zone.

If he cuts it every day, how long can it possibly take? Honestly.

Try to flip it around, if he never mowed his lawn and it was unkempt and had rats living in it, how would you feel?

It's not illegal.

All you can do is be nice to him and perhaps ask him whether he could mow less often, or, if he's retired, ask him to mow towards the middle of the day, when you're not home.

My dad mows his lawn every other day. His yard looks like a golf course. It’s gorgeous. He is 76. It gets him outside. It’s good exercise. And he takes a lot of pride in his lawn. They could easily afford to outsource this, but he finds a lot of reward in working on his lawn.

There is absolutely no one who will take your complain seriously. No one. Your neighbor has the right to mow his lawn. If he finds out you are intentionally making videos, I hope he calls the police. You don’t sound mentally well.

Sorry, I just re-read your post, and understand he's retired and you work from home. Your only hope is to establish a relationship and ask nicely.

Constantly mowing the lawn could show some sort of instability or decline, OP. Perhaps report him as saying you are concerned about his safety? The authorities will have to investigate him then.

He can do what he wants within the noise ordinance.

Don't like it, get earplugs. Or buy his property if you want to control it.

Sounds like you don't have a workspace conducive to your employment. Perhaps you need to reassess your lifestyle.

Anonymous wrote:OMG, you'd hate our neighborhood. I live in a warm-weather climate with houses pretty close together, and landscapers are out daily doing yard work on all of my neighbors' yards. There is no day that I don't hear lawnmowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, etc. You just cannot be serious here. And yes, I somehow manage to work from home.

So the issue is that everyone uses landscaping companies who zip in and out in 20 min , this guy takes at least an hour to mow almost everyday next door. I am ok with landscapers zipping in and out throughout the neighbors but an hour a day next to my window is way too much. Whats funny is he is very into social causes like the environment as noted by his car stickers, but burns his gas mower.

I sure hope this comment is a joke/sarcasm. If it isn't then this poster is a blatant bigot.

To assume everyone past a certain age is demented or unstable? Really? You seriously think this man should be reported to authorities? Did you previously live in a country run by a dictator? What exactly do you think authorities will do? Race over to his home, lights and sirens flashing, tackle him to the ground and drag him off for a competency examination?

You need to get psychological help, stat.

The first PP is correct, actually: if the behavior is new, it *could* be a symptom of a cognitive decline. My 70-year old father has started to do repetitive things every day and I can see that he's started to decline cognitively. Both his parents are dementia.

But this doesn't do anything for OP. The neighbor is surely functional enough that he would pass any dementia test, and a welfare check by police will probably not reveal any untoward behavior.

So OP, for the moment, you have to live with this.
