Catholic High School Admissions

This. they already ID’d them at camps and leagues. They contact the coach.

This isn’t travel where parents bombard the coaches/TDs and brown nose. They don’t want ANY parent involvement at the HS level. Parents never contact the Coach at that age. Major faux pas.

Maybe they don't before admission, but some do after. A small percentage of brown-nose / activist parents do badger coaches, attend practices, etc. and there's not much the AD can do about it, particularly if they are donors. It's still a faux pas, and everyone knows it is, and it doesn't make the coaches play their kids any more, but man is it gross and annoying.

Here is the form from a couple of years ago. There is a check list for the principal at the bottom of the form. I am surprised there is nothing more expected, however, I am sure the principal still has some significant influence and likely reviews all the forms before they are submitted.

Meant to say at bottom of page one. The form is pretty robust and gathers info from all teachers.

I was told this form changed significantly starting with the 2020 school year. And I have not been able to find this form online for either the 2020-2021 school year or the current 2021-2022 school year.

P.S. This form is ridiculous -- the teachers are in no position to give valued "insight" into all of these different aspects of a student.

Got this from the VISI website. It looks to be slightly revised, but not much different. https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1630000267/visiorg/e2bfzeifn730lnoaidi3/TeacherRecForm2021-editable11.pdf

Thank you very much for posting the updated form. I am so sorry I sent my kids to Catholic elementary school. Such a disappointment at every level! I cheated my kids out of an education.

You can always go back to public high school. Just watch out for the shooters.

Sorry to hear that. Catholic school is not for everyone. Reading comprehension and writing are paramount as well as discipline and manners and teaching of Christian values. Not for every child. Best of luck as you peruse your high school options.

I assume we the parents contact the coaches a year(?) in advance (if athletes not already involved in recruiting events) to determine interest and then work with school to determine academic fit.

To complicate matters, our middle school son doesn't want to apply to a Catholic High School that won't consider him to tryout.

Not much unless they are an absolute superstar.

They get kids from DC, MD and VA and tend to attract kids from top teams all over the DMV…so much so your kid may not even make the team. I see this happen to so many kids.

The “cut sports” are extremely competitive; basketball, soccer, baseball, etc. Lots of former students in NFL, NBA from my kids’ HS.

And, no YOU don’t contact the Coach. Lol they don’t want parent involvement. This isn’t travel. Lol

This is PP. Our son plays on a "top team" in MD but probably a year away from HS Coach attention. But thanks to PPs for the advice. I guess we should focus more attention on camps and ask other team parents about recruiting.

I am not sure what your disappointment is about but if your child is applying to a Catholic High School from public school they use the same teacher recommendation form. Seems like that may not me the route for your kids. Plenty of options out there, isn't that wonderful?

No, actually a different teacher recommendation form is used if you are applying to a Catholic high school from a public school.

Regardless of the form, there’s a substantial difference between a recommendation from a trusted source with whom the school has a long term relationship based on interdependence and a source with whom the high school is not familiar. This is one of the many reasons that graduates of Catholic K8s are advantaged in the application process to Catholic high schools.

AT our school you have kids from all the ECNL teams (VA and MD), MLSNext players are not allowed to play high school, but the team is pretty much filled with kids on top teams in the local area and they do not even need to recruit for them, these are kids that are applying and plan to attend anyway. Soccer is a sport that they don't recruit for along the biggies Football and Basketball.

MLSNext players are not allowed to play for their high school team? Really? I didn't think there were any restrictions.

Yep. No exceptions. Kids on MLSNext teams cannot play high school soccer. They aren’t giving waivers like they did when boys DA existed.

Kid either needs to switch to a non-MLSNext team or not play high school.

^ isn’t Achilles an mlsnext club now and isn’t the coach the one who used to put all his players on the high school team?

Yes, but only Achilles U13-U16 teams play in MLSNext. So maybe only the older Achilles players (Juniors and Seniors) play for the St. John's high school soccer team.

Good question -- not sure how this works now at SJC.

That’s the important point.

Because most schools don’t really care about soccer that much, being a soccer player isn’t much of an admissions “hook” or advantage.

It’s not close to football, basketball or lacrosse in terms of its value. There aren’t big crowds at games, broad alumni interest and support and the press coverage that the big sports attract.

So Athletic Directors aren’t going to expend many or any of their precious admissions “chits” on them.
