Maybe they don't before admission, but some do after. A small percentage of brown-nose / activist parents do badger coaches, attend practices, etc. and there's not much the AD can do about it, particularly if they are donors. It's still a faux pas, and everyone knows it is, and it doesn't make the coaches play their kids any more, but man is it gross and annoying. |
You can always go back to public high school. Just watch out for the shooters. |
Wow. - Catholic HS parent |
Sorry to hear that. Catholic school is not for everyone. Reading comprehension and writing are paramount as well as discipline and manners and teaching of Christian values. Not for every child. Best of luck as you peruse your high school options. |
This is PP. Our son plays on a "top team" in MD but probably a year away from HS Coach attention. But thanks to PPs for the advice. I guess we should focus more attention on camps and ask other team parents about recruiting. |
No, actually a different teacher recommendation form is used if you are applying to a Catholic high school from a public school. |
Regardless of the form, there’s a substantial difference between a recommendation from a trusted source with whom the school has a long term relationship based on interdependence and a source with whom the high school is not familiar. This is one of the many reasons that graduates of Catholic K8s are advantaged in the application process to Catholic high schools. |
AT our school you have kids from all the ECNL teams (VA and MD), MLSNext players are not allowed to play high school, but the team is pretty much filled with kids on top teams in the local area and they do not even need to recruit for them, these are kids that are applying and plan to attend anyway. Soccer is a sport that they don't recruit for along the biggies Football and Basketball. |
MLSNext players are not allowed to play for their high school team? Really? I didn't think there were any restrictions. |
Yep. No exceptions. Kids on MLSNext teams cannot play high school soccer. They aren’t giving waivers like they did when boys DA existed. Kid either needs to switch to a non-MLSNext team or not play high school. |
| ^ isn’t Achilles an mlsnext club now and isn’t the coach the one who used to put all his players on the high school team? |
100% |
Yes, but only Achilles U13-U16 teams play in MLSNext. So maybe only the older Achilles players (Juniors and Seniors) play for the St. John's high school soccer team. Good question -- not sure how this works now at SJC. |
That’s the important point. Because most schools don’t really care about soccer that much, being a soccer player isn’t much of an admissions “hook” or advantage. It’s not close to football, basketball or lacrosse in terms of its value. There aren’t big crowds at games, broad alumni interest and support and the press coverage that the big sports attract. So Athletic Directors aren’t going to expend many or any of their precious admissions “chits” on them. |
Not sure why you feel that way. Could you explain? |
