It's still a racist statement to make because it implies it's only diverse when you meet your quota of black students. Diversity means a range, not just one specific race, which is something quite a few activists would do well to remember. |
Being mainly Asian is not really diverse. As a PP noted, CS is heavily white/asian male. The schools itself are diverse, but CS is dominated by white/asians males. -female Asian in tech |
? did anyone say anything different on here? Yea, I would not want my Asian kids in a school where it is 90%+ dominated by one race, be it Asian, white, black or whatever. They and we like the diversity, ie, a mix of different types of people, not dominated by one type. Most people who want diversity don't have a specific quota of 25% of each group. Most folks like these are just looking for something that is not dominated by one group, that's all. But, let's be clear, the US and its power structure is still dominated by white people (mostly white males), no matter what the right wing propaganda tells you. |
But that range at many schools is low in terms of Black, Hispanic and women of all races/ethnicities . So, very important to consider. There are a lot of studies about the negative impact when your race/gender is not well-represented in a CS group because you tend to be excluded from informal study groups and your ideas ignored in organized class groups. This tends to push underrepresented groups out of the major because they feel often like they don't belong. CS is hard enough without having to fight additional battles. Back to the OP--another vote for GMU. Best CS department and internship/job placement of your options and in-state tuition. There is a commuter contingent that live with their parents, but that's very different from a suitcase school because most of them live very close given how dense the area is around the school and are eager to socialize on the weekends. There are also plenty of students that live on campus. GMU students have also formed a number of social support groups for women in STEM, people of color in STEM that are fairly active and do fun things together and have service projects besides academic support. |
Just want to give you a shout out for being a Hispanic female in Computer Science. My husband, Hispanic as well, graduated from GMU in CS, works for the government and has always been the only Latino. A few White, but lots of Asian and South East Asian men at work as you mentioned. |
How being mainly Asian and mostly men makes it Diverse? |
