Sad after subbing in the middle school.

I don’t see OP blaming anyone. Just stating the facts. The prognosis isn’t looking so good regardless of who’s responsible.

She places blame directly on them. “Many are extremely defiant…They don’t seem to understand that this is their chance to create a good future.” Pure disdain for these kids.

You should pick a different job OP.

NP: Many, many kids this age ARE defiant, and it is a problem.

No, the problem is the elected politicians who don’t care about children.

I'd love to hear what solution you think a politician can impose

Stop being so tough on kids for one. “Restorative justice” is needed in middle school.

I realize these are kids and it's not their fault. My observation is that some of these kids did were not willing to do any work or put in any effort. I'm not going to sugar coat what I observed.

This is not common behavior in most schools. Unfortunately, when I subbed I noticed this type of behavior mostly in lower income communities. Both Middle and High School.

OP, I would be worried about my kid. Make sure you talk to him/her. How is your kid doing in school?

Your opinion is not fashionable to say right now, but yeah: you are correct.

Prepare to be called a racist by the left.

4. And you're so stupid and unaware of the dynamic here, you can conclude they're all doomed after one day!!! Clearly, subbing for that age group is not for you

I don’t know how you raise your kids, but my 8th grader knows to treat both teachers and subs respectfully.

+1. My kid would be in a lot of trouble with me if I found out she was disrespectful and defiant towards an adult in charge of her classroom. Unless she's being asked to do something illegal or dangerous, a child needs to know to comply with reasonable instructions. Who are all these parents making excuses for bad behavior from kids old enough to know better?

The kids were rude to the sub because politicians are too tough on them? What?

A frequent sub in my middle school years had absolutely zero classroom management skills. None. Every class ended with her screeching from the front of the room “YOU ARE ALL GOING TO END UP IN THE GUTTER I PROMISE YOU!!!!!” If I had been a more compassionate middle schooler I would have felt sorry for her. But basically we were all just betting on how long it would take her to get to her full screech. I wonder why she thought that was a worthwhile use of her time??

Some can't read. some aren't willing to do any work at all, just sit on their phones all class period. Many are extremely defiant. One girl announced to the class I was racist because of "the way I looked at her". Kids loudly announcing they "hate all subs". So many of these kids seem to be headed to a life on minimum wage jobs. They don't seem to understand that this is their chance to create a good future. Of course there were some really great kids too, but overall I feel sad.

Then shouldn't we make sure minimum wage is a livable wage?

Also, shouldn't we make sure that kids are screened early for reading disabilities?

Can you tell us where you subbed? I have an 8th grader, and so many kids misbehave. I blame the schools though! They allow it, and they haven’t educated the kids so when they hit 8th grade, they are behind and filled with attitude & defense mechanisms.

What does this mean? I've subbed for all grade levels, public and private schools. What I notice is that most of the public schools don't seem to enforce rules. In public school, I tell students to put their phones away and they refuse. I tell them again and they refuse. I asked the admin what to do when this happens and they said they aren't allowed to take their phones when they won't comply with rules. I ask them what they do instead and they said nothing. Same situation in private school but when I see a phone out, I'm supposed to write down the name of the student and confiscate the phone. Most kids don't even have them out and if they do, they hand it over. They get detention for it.

And yet amazingly, despite being disrespectful to a sub who asked me to stop sleeping on my desk in 8th grade (I didn't feel well and told her to go away and leave me alone), I managed to wind up with a job that pays more than minimum wage.

Oh please! There's a difference between sleeping on your desk and talking back to a teacher and we all know it.
OP, I hear you. If anything, I'd be more concerned about my kid going to that school.

1. You are an asshole
2. You have no manners and neither does your spawn.
3. Most kids, even in 8th grade, don't act like monkeys.
4. And you're so stupid and aware of the dynamic here that you're expressing your idiotic opinions.

I for one do not call racism. Sure, the brown demographic has its coverage, but low income whites are absolutely included. Anyone who has a kid in a highly mixed income school knows this. Though I suppose that's not the dcurbanmom profiel.

Yeah the problem with this is in just a few short years, all in one day, some suddenly says, your grown now, your an adult, it's all your fault.
So we have to stop giving tweens and teens this idea that they have absolutely no contribution to their own circumstances. Yes there are some things outside their control but there are some things they can control.

Ask the Sub in your kid’s classes how s/he behaved with a sub.

DP. You realize that plenty of kids, even “grouchy adolescents,” are fully capable of getting through a single class period without being rude to the adult in charge?

DP I have seen many an inexperienced or substitute teacher perceive a child as rude without considering at all how they presented themselves. Its a hard relationship to balance, especially with middle schoolers. Even more so if you are new to it

That's not disdain. It's concern and alarm. Agree with you OP.
