School Within a School

Because it’s mindless trolling.

Because a disproportionately white and high-income school has no business calling itself woke unless they're also going to do the at-risk preference.

They don’t control the preferences, friend.

Anonymous wrote:Seriously people this thread is beyond ridiculous. Yes, SWS’s history is more than uncomfortable with respect to race but at the moment they are probably one of the most woke schools out there. They teach California math. Their “holiday concert” consists of no mainstream songs that are played on the radio. If you are extremely progressive you will find friends at SWS. It is hardly the conservative enclave that people on this forum describe it to be.

We left because we found the curriculum unchallenging and not meeting the needs of our children. We found the catering to medicated and disruptive kids, at the expense of well behaved kids who showed up to learn, nauseating. This is the one thing that has not changed, even while the culture has. I fail to understand why so many parents do not focus on that. But seriously if you love sws, more power to you! If you “lost” on the lottery, please don’t lose sleep bc it is not all that. It is mainly a place to avoid miner, Payne, etc.

I love, love, love that these things are the measure of wokeness in SWS parents' eyes.

+1. I thought PP was satirizing, but i guess it was a serious post?

We live on the Hill but send to private school in NW so I don't have the same school anxiety as the vast majority of parents in our area but my perception is that parents who are at SWS truly believe they've won the lottery - they can't afford to send to private or move to NW for better schools but because they are white UMC, they are terrified of their kids attending a majority non-white school. The sheer relief on their faces when they tell me that they are SWS is palatable. That plus the "well I'm a good person because I send my kid to public school" vibe. It's people who want private school but can't afford it and like to pretend they are good white people.

Are they advocating for it, friend? Would they?

any insight into why sws will not have the new at-risk preference for prek3 next year? it does seem like maybe the citywide schools in particular maybe all should have it.

I’m quite sure the principal would LOVE having an at-risk preference. He’s a hippie.

I'm the PP - no, not pot...kettle. I don't pretend to be something I'm not. And we can afford private. Do what you want to do, but be honest about it. Don't pretend you're a good white person because you live on the Hill and send your kid to DCPS when you're sending them to SWS. I'm honest about who I am - paying for private to not deal with public school. Yes, I'm a shitty white person.

If you live on the hill up can afford something in NW or very near in. Unless you're in a condo.

That was not true when the at-risk preference first surfaced years ago. If he's come around, then good for him.
