Seems like great faculty, personal attention and actively tries to help students upon graduation w/ alumni networks and school affiliations. Some nice historic buildings on campus. Gorgeous dining hall. New green science building being built. Also, voted best food in PA!

The food is so bad. We visited this summer and the visit included lunch. Made me concerned about the other PA schools if it was rated best. I know people love the school but we were not impressed (apart from food I mean).

Why would you feel the need to say that? It’s obnoxious.

How is it obnoxious? We were genuinely perplexed by how bad the food was given its reputation.

The person made the suggestion and you felt the need to say you were not impressed by the school even apart from the food. That person likes the school, so why put it down? Especially when you don’t give any reason why you didn’t like it, as if your opinion on its own is more authoritative than the other person’s.

Not a hidden gem. It’s a very elite college. You people know nothing!

Never heard of it.

It is not well-known at all. Even in SoCal, it's not known.

Just stop. It’s ranked 8th in Us News. It’s extremely selective. It’s not “hidden” in any way, shape or form.

Almost no one pays attention to US News for LAC rankings outside of maybe the top 3 or 5 schools. Other schools are heavily regional in reputation. In DC, CMC is NOT known even by the highly educated. Yes it is a hidden gem. Selectivity numbers don't mean much when you only get ~6000 applicants from an international applicant pool of several million a year.

NP here. No, it's not. It's widely known as a top school.

+1 We were impressed by their open house this Fall and it's definitely on DD's list for next year. Ticks all her boxes re a small school with strong environmental science programs. And she liked the food and they were very allergy friendly which is important for her.

My niece dislikes it very much.

Why?

And I agree with the “lowly midwest” poster (haha)- my “lowly Mass” self in hs same time period also knew of it and thought it was a top college!

First, that is awesome about Muhlenberg, thanks for the tip.

Second, I have never heard of someone seriously considering Brandeis and BC, so that is really interesting to me. Many kids considered/attended both colleges from my HS but not the same kids. (Brandeis and BU, yes. Brandeis and Tufts, yes. Maybe BC and BU, but more likely BC and other colleges not in Boston area.)

A good number of schools being mentioned here have profiles on this site. I'm sure the troll(s) will be here shortly to hijack the thread, but for those interested in the topic, you may find some insights here:

Popular in the Northeast, but not more widely known:
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)
Cooper Union

Popular in California, but not well known outside the West Coast:
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
California Maritime Academy

I grew up in SoCal, graduated HS in 2000, very diverse middle class suburban city. I knew very little about the Claremont Colleges or Deep Springs College, despite both being quite prestigious among those in academic circles. No one in my HS was applying to those schools, it wasn't even presented to me as an option. In hindsight, I would've been a great fit at Claremont Everyone I know was going to UCs, a handful of California religious-affiliated privates (Pepperdine, Chapman, Azusa Pacific, Concordia, etc), and a few going out-of-state (like me).

KU must be the most underrated flagship. Any decent student can get in, get at least a solid education, and have a fantastic experience in a first-rate college town--all without paying through the nose for it.

Very poor planning for social events, inc parents weekend. This affects the overall happiness of my niece there. Likes the education, esp the class her friend (boy) is taking where he has an English lit class once a week with inmates at the prison.
