Mandarin

Is Mandarin taught in any FCPS high schools? How about Loudoun?

My daughter has been taking it for a few years and I always assumed she would continue up through HS, but I was surprised recently to overhear someone saying it is NOT offered. Is this true?

My daughter is 7 so we obviously have a long ways to go, but. . .

If it is not offered at your local HS, are you allowed to request to go to another one which does offer it? (?)

We are currently zoned for Herndon HS.

We have it at Marshall as part of the Academy.

Are you Chinese? Why would you want to take Mandarin?

My daughters were adopted from China so, yes, they are Chinese, and yes, the are the ones for whom I am asking.

Thanks for replying, Marshall Academy person.

Do any other schools have it?

The FCPS website is hard to search. You have to select each school individually and then see which "World Languages" they offer. So far, I have seen that Herndon, South Lakes, and Langley do NOT have it.

I am extremely surprised not to see it offered.

I know that Paul VI even does offer Mandarin, though not 4 full years, so that is not an option either.

Chinese through the AP level is offered at TJ and Marshall.

Thanks so much. So these are the only two schools in FCPS which offer it?

No, I wasn't. I don't understand why someone would take Chinese in this area otherwise. It doesn't have any real utility unless you anticipate living and working in China.

Not the person you are responding to, but. . .

That's great. Now, can you stop clogging up my thread where I am trying to find out some concrete information here?

1) How can I find out which schools other than Marshall and TJ (if any) offer Mandarin? I have already looked on FCPS website. Short of randomly selecting each school and searching out the info within the site, I am not seeing any way to search for this. (?)

2) If you are zoned for a school that does not offer Mandarin, can you switch to one that does offer it?

Not sure about other schools, but Chinese is part of Marshall's Academy. This means that you can be bussed from another school to Marshall to take the class. You may need to be in a certain area, however, to get bussed. For example, Falls Church, McLean, and Langley all come to Marshall as they are fairly close. I am not sure if other schools allow it if they are further away.

Fairfax also has it as part of their Academy. Is that closer to you than Marshall?

Check yourself, OP. It's not "your" thread. I was responding to a direct question.

I know you're new, but in the future, refrain from admonishments like that. Thank you.

Actually, it is her thread. In the future, refrain from being a jerk. Thanks!
