Infertility Support and Discussion
|
I had a D&C one month ago to the date, at 8weeks of gestation when the heart stopped beating...
I got results last weeks that it was a "triploidy baby". According to my fertility software I did ovulate around 14 days after my D&C and I got my period yesterday, 13 days after my supposed ovulation (what is the norm for me when I am not on fertility drugs). My period seems slightly more intense and is definately more "red", like in bright red...usually it is dark brown and has lots of clots on it. That was my first pregnancy and of course, my first miscarriage/D&C. I chose to have a D&C (and not wait for it to be expelled naturally) because I wanted to know if something was wrong with the baby and because I wanted to have it all over asap and re-start my treatment also a.s.a.p. My nurse told me that after my period (if it was not too early) they would check my HCG levels and if they were back to zero I could do another cyle of IUI... To my surprise my doctor now says I will only be able to do another IUI IN MAY!!! Anyone here the doc. wanted to wait 3 cycles after a D&C to re-start treatment? What is the reason for that? If I had let it expelled naturally would I be able to do the treatment sooner? Is he waiting 3 months because it was a triploidy baby? Should I get second opinion? Thanks. |
| what did the doctor say when you asked why you needed to wait? |

I didn't talk to the doctor, only the nurse...we never talk to the doctor directly (ugh!)
Also, when the nurse called me I was at work and quite frankly, I was shocked after she said "May" that didn't really occur to me to ask "why"... but she said something about re-building the lining. I know some doctors want us to wait 2, 3 and even 6 months after a miscarriage, but when I talked to my nurse immediately after my D&C and yesterday, she said that usually they (as in SG) begin treatment after 2 months – and since I was not examined by then yet after the D&C, why was I singled out to wait 1 extra month? That is what strikes me as odd. I know it is just “one extra month”, but we are not getting any younger here – and I would like to have the opportunity to do 2 or 3 IUIs before the summer. |

I would ask to speak with your doctor directly. Leave a message with your nurse for the physician to call you back. Once your hcg is zero there shouldn't be any reason to delay IUI during the next cycle.
SG has a lot of "policies" but I've found my individual doctor to be quite flexible when I've asked for protocol deviations. Perhaps this is because I know him extremely well (I've been seeing him for over 4 years and for the conception of 2 children) but I'd hazard a guess that most of their physicians are quite reasonable on a case-by-case basis. |
| I am not on treatment, but my first pregnancy ended with D&C at 8 weeks, because the baby never developed a heartbeat. The doctor told me to wait for 3-6 months, before trying to get pregnant again to allow the menstrual cycle to re-establish itself and the reproductive system to 'recuperate'. |
| I had two D&Cs (no heartbeat in both cases). My doctor told me that even though I may be able to get pregnant a month later, statistics show a slightly better chance of a successful pregnancy if the pregnancy starts at least 3 months after the D&C so he advised me to wait. I took his advice and waited. I did have a full term healthy baby after each one of the D&Cs. |

I've had 3 d&cs, and each time, my body had a different reaction. There was a variance in times that it took my period to resume, variance in the level/ intensity of periods for a couple of months, etc. So I have to believe that even though a D&C is probably the best route to go in these cases (as it speeds up the inevitable), it's still trauma to the body and takes it some time to heal.
If your doctor said to wait until May, I would probably just wait (nothing wrong with asking why, of course). From his/ her experience, or maybe even studies, there may be evidence to show that pregnancy is more successful several months down the road. Why take a chance, especially if you're going through fertility treatments and not just trying on your own? May is really just around the corner, anyway! |
| I had a m/c last Labor Day weekend at about 9wks. We had previously seen a heartbeat. D&C that week, and test results revealed she had been a genetically normal baby girl. No reason was identified for the m/c, although my obgyn assured me that I'd done nothing wrong myself. He told us we could begin trying again after my next period. It did take about 6wks for that first period. fwiw, I'm not on any fertility treatments. We have not whole-heartedly tried since then -- i.e. not charting, not going out of our way to have lots of sex, etc... so I am not yet pregnant again. |

I was 38 when I was TTC. I had a miscarriage at exactly 8 weeks, and had a D&C. My doctor never told me to wait, just to keep trying, and when my body was back in sync, I would hopefully conceive again. I mention my age because my fertility or lack thereof was completely unknown, and they wanted me to TTC for six months before starting any type of treatment. ISo I assume she was rushing me.) I did get pregnant about 2 months after that and went on to have a healthy baby. But was never told "not" to try.
So....I'd definitely ask your doc more about it. |
