LITTLE NELL IN ASPEN

Anonymous
My son is invited to go to Aspen over spring break with his good friend and family who go every year. I have never been, am not a skiier. They are staying at the Little Nell, wondering how nice it is? $$$? They are getting three rooms, one for their daughter and friend, one for their son and my son and one for themselves. I feel like maybe we should offer something towards the room...not sure. Is it very expensive, kid friendly (teens)?

Amazing place but expensive!

My family used to take trips when we could bring friends. My mom never expected them to put any money toward the airfare or room, but did hope that the friends parents would give them some of their own spending money for the time they were there.

That's what I would do. If you are unsure though, you can always ask.

Wow, I like your son's friends, they have good taste

I would make sure that the hotel is the only thing they pay for when it comes to your son. Pay for his ticket, give him $ for ski rentals, food, etc.

Sigh.....trip of a lifetime. Wow. I've only ever eaten there. It is right at the ski lift. Agree with what other posters said.

Wildly expensive. OP, I'm assuming you know this family -- does sound consistent?

Did a little research and wow it is very expensive, crazy! Yes this family is very very wealthy so it is in keeping with what I would expect them to do, wish I could tag along

Thats where the wealthy stay. If you can afford to, offer what you can. We are the parents who take DS' best friend places. We never want or expect them to offer, but when they do it is very appreciated.

Wow - you must be in an exclusive private school.

Is the family bringing their dog, too?

I wouldn't worry about the hotel but make sure your dc has plenty of money for food, tickets, etc.

My DC went to a nice resort with a friends family. They paid for everything but then invoiced me for my DCs share of meals, but not the room. I actually liked that approach. My DC didn't have to worry about it and I didn't feel guilty about them spending money.

You can also have your DC offer to treat everyone to dinner out one night but with 6 people that could be $600-$800.

Seriously? Invoiced you? I am sorry that seems really cheap to me. I cannot imagine doing that, maybe I am in the minority.

Agreed -- go somewhere you can afford if you want to host -- I'd sooner go to Vermont and not send out invoices than go to Aspen and mail out bills.
