how is after care?

hi folks:

just wondering what your experiences have been with aftercare, particularly for young children. i am considering putting my 4yo in a dcps pre-k, but she would need aftercare until 530 or so.

i know it probably varies by school, but any input is appreciated!

after care at my dd's elementary school was great -- but as you said it varies by school.

I think you'll get much more useful information if you indicate which school you're asking about. Every school is different so a general answer just isn't likely to tell you much.

we are in a bunch of lotteries, so i guess i am inquiring about:

We have a Kindergartener at Bancroft who goes to aftercare. We've been happy with it so far. I believe that all the aftercare kids are escorted to the gym by a classroom teacher who then hands the kids off to the aftercare teacher. The kids then go to a classroom with same age peers (or outside if the weather is nice). They work on homework and play. The aftercare teachers are Kindergarten teachers at the school. It runs until 6:30. Aftercare coordintaor is Jennifer Ramos if you have more questions.

Any insight on aftercare at Lafayette and/or Washington Yu Ying?

Don't know about Lafayette, but the aftercare program at Yu Ying is fabulous!! It is heavily staffed, and the children are offered different choices every day of what they'd like to do: my daughter (kindergarten) does Kung Fu with an amazing instructor 2x per week, and Chinese arts and crafts with a wonderful Chinese art teacher another 2x per week as her "main" class, and then has free play outside and inside for the other approximately half hour of aftercare time with college students who supervise. The kids go on field trips (by school bus) every other Friday according to their age group. So far this year she's been to almost every museum in DC! We love it.
