Has anyone dealt with this before? After round three of standardized tests, I think DS realizes he's just about maxed out in the 1900 range. He has a good GPA though (3.8 unweighted...) from an area public with several APs and honors. Good, but nothing spectacular, extracurriculars. One varsity sport. One leadership position.
I always hear about the "smart but lazy" dilemma (low GPA, high scores) but never really the opposite. |
| Soft grading? Have you checked DS's naviance? 1900/3.8 doesn't seem too out of line. What is his Wt GPA and how many APs has he taken? |
| Search for test optional schools. Bowdoin, Wake Forest and more excellent schools every year |
|
How do you propose to deal with this? Top schools are out of reach, but he can get into a decent college and get a solid education.
If you are willing to pay for a private college, he'll have more options. |
| Does your school have naviance? Naviance charts will allow you to compare your child's stats to students in your school and which colleges they were accepted to. From your post, it appears that your child has math and critical reading scores in the 600-625 range. I would not consider that "low". Start searching for schools in his SAT range-public , private, whichever your student and you prefers. |
| why not look at schools that are test optional or no testing required period. More and more to choose from every year. And 1900's is still above this countries median scores! |
| 1900 is not "low." What's the breakdown? |
| and what scores has he gotten on AP tests? |
| 1900 means 600 to 700 on each section. How is that low? Seems commensurate with a 3.8. |
| Those stats will get him into any number of decent schools. The test scores are not low by any stretch of the imagination. |
+1 he should apply to test optional schools and schools that fall in his range of test scores. Lots of options- Bates, Beloit, Clark, Hamilton, Lawrence, Mulhenberg. |
| I hate humble-brag. It really makes those of us with real issues feel like crap. |
| I get it OP, my DC was in the high 2300s, and I therefore understand that 1900 can seem disappointing, but it is really a solid score. |
Oh yeah!? My DC was in the high 2600, so there!
|
I get it. My DD had weakish grades along with weakish scores similar to OP's kid. Fortunately, she's full pay and was accepted to her first choice private ranked around 25th (if you care about that sort of thing).
