The lawyer’s wife does not sleep in their bed. Though he should not be shocked that his wife wants to leave him, he is shocked. Though he should not be confused, he is confused. He does not know how to proceed. In the face of this predicament, he is passive. ?He writes his wife’s name on his to-do list, just below renewing his passport and making an appointment to see his accountant. Her name has stayed on the list for weeks. He cannot cross his wife’s name off the list. She is not a problem he can solve. He wants his marriage to survive but his behavior, he knows full well, is foolish. He bullies her, and she digs in her heels. "Are you staying or going?" he asks. This does the opposite of what he wants: it pushes her away. The lawyer wants things to stay intact at any cost, however imperfect, however ?false.

Re-read your post and you will understand why all your clients call force you to take a 20% haircut on your bill.
