Low sperm count and limited ejaculation

I had been not trying/not preventing with DH for a year. After nothing happened we decided to start getting serious about it. DH claimed that it wasn't happening because he masturbates daily and is probably losing too much sperm. I didn't think that would be an issue but decided to take his word, just in case. When we limited his ejaculation to only when we had sex (every other day around when I was ovulating) we conceived immediately. I had ordered a home sperm kit test before this and we went ahead and tested him, and his count came up as below normal.

I'm wondering if daily ejaculation would affect any man's fertility or if it would only affect a man with a low sperm count. Anyone have experience with this?

I assume that it can as the fertility doctors say to not do it more than every other day when you are TTC.
