How long to trends last?

I just had a phone consult with a decorator who told me that the trend now is light everything. This was disappointing because our house currently has dark everything which has me thinking we need to start all over. After years of moving frequently and always renting, we finally own and are staying her awhile so I'm actually considering selling what we do have and starting over. I do want a fresh start. But how long does these trends last?

That's why it's a good idea not to follow trends. Have a mix of furniture types and colors and then move things around when you feel like it. Save the trends for things like throw pillows that can be rotated in and out.
